Coming up to my first school placement in October I am looking forward to be able to gain even more insight into what being a teacher will be like. I am hoping that from this placement I will be able to identify my current strengths in a classroom environment but also be able to identify any weaknesses that I have so that I can work on them before going on placement in second year. I am excited to find out what school I will be going to and finding out who I will be going on placement with, but I am also nervous as we don’t find out where we are going until the week before placement starts. I am interested to see the different teaching styles that the teacher I work with will use and also how they control the class and effectively deal with each individual students needs within the classroom as there are many. Overall, I am eager to go on placement and am excited to learn lots more about working within a classroom environment but also helping and communicating effectively with all of the pupils within the classroom and their class teacher.

My first week at university went better than i expected. Before i came here i was nervous about everything and knew i’d face some new challenges. However, as soon as i started i felt more secure and was ready to kick off a good academic year. I now understand, after speaking to people, that everyone felt the same and were all nervous before coming here. This made me realise that everyone was all in the same boat and that we could help each other get through the daunting first few weeks.

The ‘Getting to Know You” workshop with Angela was probably my favourite part as the energy she put into it made me feel more confident and helped me talk to new people which i was not great at before. The energy shown by Angela has given me an insight into how teachers should be. Everyone in the workshop left in a good mood and listened to her the whole time due to her personality being so open and free.

This first week has made me believe that i can have a successful year and i look forward to facing new challenges in the course and in placement.

As the first year of placement is fast approaching, I have an overwhelming feeling of excitement and additionally feeling anxious as it is a whole new experience.

I have a small amount of experience of working with primary aged children; such as doing my work experience in a local primary school and also volunteering in an Additional Support Needs class in my last year of high school. Whilst I am looking forward to my first year of placement in October, I am also feeling nervous as I know I will be faced with new challenges that I have not had to deal with before.

I am interested to see after the two weeks of placement how I will assess myself, looking at my strengths and areas of development. Having the chance to observe a teacher during the placement will give a real insight into what it’s like having your own class.

Using these blog posts will allow me to record any progress made over the next 4 years, and therefore I will be able to reflect back to them at anytime to compare my strengths and weaknesses from the previous years.

Before my first week at UWS, I was quite nervous and anxious to start my course. I was worried about meeting new people and being in a different environment as I had been so comfortable for 6 years with people I had gotten to know very well so changing to this new environment was quite scary. I then began to come to the realisation that everyone was in the exact same position as me so it made the first week a little less scary and put me at ease (just a little bit though, I was still very very nervous).

From my first week, I will always remember the ‘Getting to Know You’ Workshop with Angela. Going into the Performance Studio was very nerve wracking due to the fact that there were seats set out in a big circle which was very intimidating because you were so exposed to everyone else which was uncomfortable and awkward. As the workshop went on it became less and less awkward as we played ice breakers and really got to know one another and found some interesting facts about each other. Angela really made the whole process easier as she is such a bubbly and lovely person and really wants you to be more confident in yourself! I really enjoyed this workshop and think that in the future my confidence levels and self esteem will definitely increase due to Angela’s workshop which will really help me for placement.

Overall my first week at UWS was very enjoyable but it will certainly take a while to get used to the new environment because it is so different to my time in high school but I can’t wait for my time on the course!

Having a think about our 2 week placement, I started to consider classroom organisation and management. During my placement in a primary 3 classroom I noticed all the different ways the teacher went about using communication to get the class attention. There were many verbal methods used such as the teacher saying “macaroni cheese” and the pupils saying back “everybody freeze.” This was a good way to get the pupils attention without shouting and also making it fun for them by letting them get involved. I also noticed that non-verbal communication methods were also used such as clapping sequences. This was effective as the pupils had to listen to repeat back the sequence so it got their attention instantly. I enjoyed this experience as I was able to learn tips from a professional who has experience on what works well and what doesn’t within the classroom.

17.09.2018 Lecture

This lecture was very lively and interactive with Angela. Due to it being this kind of environment, I am able to reflect on it easily and remember most of the information given to us. I am looking forward to taking part in more workshops and getting to know more people and communicating in various ways.

Looking forward with excitement and a small dose nervousness about all the new things that lie ahead of me. My hopes are to learn from the first placement about what I need to work on and what I can actually say is a strength. The unknown will change to the known but the learning will continue. I feel I have learned so much so far and it has only been a week. I go home happy feeling accomplished in what I have done and wanting to continue that learning every minute.

Over the years I think I have learnt a lot about myself. Learning who I am and how strong I can be. I have seen the world and I have been in the school environments. I know that teaching is what I want to do. Picturing myself having my own class has been there since i was 18. 8 years later here I am.

I hope it four years time I will look back and see the change in myself and with my knowledge. Learning the theory and the practices I need.  The nervousness and learning will still be there but I will know what I can do and what I have the power to achieve.
