Initially, starting university at UWS seemed quite scary and daunting for many reasons. It was my first time travelling to ayr from Glasgow on my own using the train which was scary prospect in itself, but i also knew absolutely nobody coming to study Education at UWS. However the people at UWS were very welcoming and made me feel right at home the minute i walked into the reception area. My first week at UWS i was introduced to many new people and lecturers within the university as well as meeting lots of new people and making some new friends. The first week was packed full of lots of important information on module options and professionalism. What i found most helpful through the whole of induction week was speaking to the BA2 students as it was extremely helpful to hear there experiences, their thoughts and opinions on certain modules from BA1 as well as hearing any advice they had for us.

Initially, starting at University seemed very daunting. I felt too young and not ready for the adventure ahead. One week in and I can confidently say that those worries and fears I had before starting are slowly starting to decrease with the more lecturers I meet and the more information I am provided. If I’m being honest I still have a number of fears mainly about the high level of coursework and the number of assignments/assessments and exams that we will have to complete in BA1 education. I now know that I will be well supported and be given the information I need for each task and that I can ask any questions I have. Another worry of mine, before starting, was the early hours and the long travel which I am now slowly getting used to and it is becoming normal routine to me now. A major worry of mine was making friends. Thankfully, I have managed to meet a number of lovely people both in my course and in UWS in general. I feel more confident and happy going into my 4 years studying BA hons education.

My First two Weeks on the BA Education Course

I have now been in the BA1 education programme for 2 weeks and i have never enjoyed something so much in my life. I have been able to meet new people with the same interests and passion as myself. I have now been in the BA1 education programme for 2 weeks and i have never enjoyed something so much in my life. I have been able to meet new people with the same interests and passion as myself. We have taken part in Situated communication, Mathematics, Literacy of Understanding and French. Through my own primary education i feared some of these topics and i am so looking forward to tackle them head on and over come these fears because in the short time I've spent on the course i understand the importance of having a positive outlook on everything i teach and not passing my fears. Everyone i have encountered on the course, Lectures and students, have made me even more excited to become a teacher and I'm excited to start my first placement in October.

I am now in week 3 of the BA Education programme and so far I am really enjoying it. Prior to starting UWS, I was very nervous and anxious about the whole  experience as it was something very new and also very different to what I was used to. Hearing other peoples views on university added to my anxiety about starting as they had made it out to be something so great that i felt like, if I did not feel the same way they did when they started university then I should not be here. But this attitude of mines quickly changed. Although it was very different from high school, I felt like i needed the change. However even though the first few days were difficult and very intense, I know in the end it will all be worth it. Settling into BA1 has been over whelming and a little difficult to get used to but now being two weeks in to going to lectures, tutorials and workshops everyday, I now feel like I am used to it and by the end of BA4 it will all be second nature to me. As our first placement is quickly coming upon us, it as all became very real and that in a few short years I will finally be a qualified primary teacher.

In relation to going out on Placement I have a variety of different thoughts and feelings. I am excited to see teaching in action and to receive an overview of the different aspects of teaching. I am also looking forward to interacting with children and staff members as I feel this is a great way to build my communication skills. On the other hand I am slightly nervous about the struggles and challenges I may face whilst on placement, however I am happy that I have another student taking the same journey with me therefore we can help and support each other.

Welcome to my first post on my Glow blog as a BA Education Student. This is where the ‘reflection’ aspect of teaching begins and I could not be more excited. My first week at UWS has been a great introduction to a course that I am thrilled to be apart of and I am looking forward to the next 4 years (and of course the further future as a primary school teacher).

School placement, I see as the heart of the BA education course, it is the core of the profession as you are directly in the working and busy environment of an everyday classroom. I can imagine how much knowledge, strategies and lesson inspiration that you will take away from even a small time in placement as a student teacher. Looking back at my primary school years and now seeing my little sister also go through her primary education – I have generated a small sense of the development in the education system and teaching methods now in place in 2018.

I will be going on my 2 week placement, I’m not sure in which school yet, with an open mind; bursting sense of excitement and energy but also a feeling of anxiousness – which I feel is normal when you wish to succeed to your best ability. Already within 2 sessions of Situated Communication I am certain I will have developed more confidence within myself and grow a better understanding of myself as an effective communicator as time goes on.

I’m also going to enjoy writing and keeping up-to-date with blog posts. Not only for evidence purposes but for my own interest to look back on as I go through the course, I think it will be very satisfying.
