First Week Reflections

I was quite anxious and worried about starting university as a mature student because I expected to be, very much, older than my cohort. I was pleasantly surprised to find others of a similar age to myself and, also, that the younger students are very friendly and I have things in common with them.

Much of my first week has been focused on communication and I have really enjoyed it. The communication lectures and workshops have been eye opening for me and have made me think, more than I ever have, about how I communicate and how I can build on my communication skills.

I am very aware that I become very nervous when speaking out in group settings, however, I have set myself a challenge to help to overcome this. I will speak out, if I have something to say, when in group settings. I hope that this will help to build my confidence and will put me more at ease when faced with these challenges.

My first week at UWS has been very exciting although slightly nerve-racking. I came straight from 6th year at school and was unsure about what i was coming to. As soon as i entered the main doors on the first morning i immediately felt at ease as everyone was so welcoming and friendly. The first lecture was full of information ranging from things like school placements to assessments. I really enjoyed getting to know more about the course especially from some BA2 students about what to expect in the coming months. I continue to look forward to the year ahead in BA1 and working alongside other people.

First Two Weeks

The expectations that I had for University were very different from it’s reality. At first I thought my induction week would have been many, many stalls, icebreakers and many, many nights out. However, I quickly came to realise that UWS was different – in a good way. In terms of Education we got a real feel for what was to expect. There was no sugar-coating which personally gave me the honest opinion that I needed. Everyday was full and enjoyable, each workshop taking me out of my comfort zone and making me think outside of the box. Already I feel ready to face the challenges ahead, I know that there will be difficult times but overall I am willing to push myself and I am looking forward to the next four years of the course.

My first two weeks at UWS have been full of learning. As I have came straight from High School I was unsure of what to expect. My first thoughts were that it was extremely over-whelming and not what I imagined. However, on the first day everyone was really helpful and I was made to feel comfortable and settled. We were straight into learning. I expected to come in to ice breakers and different simple activities but instead we were given powerpoints of information. As I have worked my way through the first two weeks of University I have gained more knowledge and understanding on the information in the course. I have also enjoyed meeting lots of new people. I feel from this i have widely developed on my communication skills. I am looking forward to the next year of education.
