{"id":3090,"date":"2015-10-19T11:18:33","date_gmt":"2015-10-19T11:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/STEMcentralinmotion\/?p=3090"},"modified":"2015-10-19T11:18:33","modified_gmt":"2015-10-19T11:18:33","slug":"new-science-funding-135000-to-support-science-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/glowblogs\/STEMcentralinmotion\/2015\/10\/19\/new-science-funding-135000-to-support-science-in-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"New science funding &#8211; \u00a3135,000 to support science in schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.scotland.gov.uk\/News\/New-science-funding-1e6e.aspx\">\u00a3135,000 will be invested into Scotland-wide science initiatives that complement and support young peoples\u2019 STEM learning at school and help bring \u2018real life\u2019 STEM into the classroom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The funding will go towards four separate initiatives as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Generation Science \u2013 Edinburgh International Science Festival &#8211; \u00a350,000 (Science shows for primary schools)<\/li>\n<li>Young Engineers and Science Clubs \u2013 Scottish Council for Development and Industry &#8211; \u00a340,000 (for primary and secondary schools)<\/li>\n<li>British Science Week \u2013 British Science Association \u2013 \u00a325,000 (for primary and secondary schools and community organisations)<\/li>\n<li>GeoBus \u2013 University of St Andrews \u2013 \u00a320,000 (Geo-scientific activity and learning days for secondary pupils)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Angela Constance said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarlier this month the Science Minister met pupils from Alness Academy\u2019s Science Club who have represented Scotland and won national prizes for their science and engineering. This is just one example of the range of talented and enthusiastic young people we meet in our schools on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent surveys have suggested that younger children and parents can feel that STEM subjects are difficult or not suited to everyone, but activities that complement simple classroom learning clearly enhance enthusiasm to beyond the school day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe technology and engineering sector in Scotland generates turnover of \u00a324.4 billion each year employing 155,000 in total which shows how nurturing an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) while children and young people are in school has the potential to be literally life changing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope the funding I am announcing today will stir even more of our young people, particularly girls, to take an interest in science and develop a career in an area that makes the most of their talents.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a3135,000 will be invested into Scotland-wide science initiatives that complement and support young peoples\u2019 STEM learning at school and help bring \u2018real life\u2019 STEM into the classroom.
