Tell a Story Listen to what the Tell a Story Learning Opportunity is all about

‘Tell a Story Day’ is celebrated across Scotland in October. In the 3 weeks leading up to this national event join Storytellers in the ‘bothy’ at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh via Glow TV. Enjoy listening to the storytellers share tales about nations and territories within the Commonwealth, about personal challenge and achievement and memorable, adventurous and incredible journeys. ‘Journeys’ is the theme for this year’s event. While listening, learn how to tell and perform oral stories. Then take the opportunity to ask the storytellers questions about their ideas and techniques to help you plan and hold your own ‘Tell a Story Day’ event. On ‘Tell a Story’ day we plan to broadcast your stories across Scotland via Glow TV. How do you get selected? Send a video clip of you performing your story and we will get back to you. We can’t wait!

These challenges are designed to develop creativity and collaborative skills.

Creativity skills include being inquisitive, open minded, harnessing imagination, identifying and solving problems.

An interdisciplinary learning approach is used to develop a context for a set of four weekly challenges.

Each term a different context/theme will be developed:

Autumn – Colour
Winter – Water
Spring – Paper
Summer – Natural Scotland

Where appropriate the context will be used to develop learning experiences for all curriculum levels within broad general education.

When creativity challenges are no longer live they will be made available through the national learning channels.

Educators – Learn more about….. Mix it up!

Mix it up! is an interdisciplinary learning experience developed for early level learners and is part of a progression of creativity challenges designed around the context of colour.

The Mix it up learning experience outline provides practitioners with an overview of the learning experiences using the NAR flow chart process and the publication ‘Taking a closer look at NAR.

Mix it up creates a context in which learners can be supported to:

Undertake simple scientific investigations
Be creative
Share and learn with peers through Glow
Profile and recognise achievement

These challenges will be live in September 2013. Afterwards they will be made available as packs of learning, teaching and assessment resources in the Creativity Learning Channel on Glow.

Explore natural colour creativity challenges with children across Scotland and be amazed and inspired by everyone’s outdoor discoveries.

What colour is the sky?
How many greens can you find outside?
Are there any seasonal colour clues?
Why are some creatures colourful and others not?

These are just some of the questions that will be asked while you look at, think about, gather information about and create with natural colour.

Great Scottish Schools Bake Off Listen to what the Great Scottish Schools Bake Off is all about

In September 2013 Chefs@school, the Cooking Bus and Education Scotland are challenging learners across Scotland to form baking teams and enter the Great Scottish Schools Bake Off!

Glow TV will broadcast live Chefs@School boarding the Cooking Bus at four different locations across Scotland to demonstrate a variety of baking techniques using local, seasonal produce to help you create and serve a delicious afternoon tea to help raise money to support others in your community.

You will have the opportunity to improve your understanding and skills in measurement, nutrition, food hygiene and how to manage your finances to ensure your bake off is profitable.

Bake bread, scones, muffins and fruit tarts
Prepare healthy foods safely and hygienically
Measure accurately
Manage your finances
Run a charitable event in your local community
Develop teamwork skills
Identify the strengths and talents within your baking team and maximise potential!

Colours of the Commonwealth Listen to what the Colours of the Commonwealth learning experience is all about

Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Scotland is one of the 71 nations and territories that will participate in the games. These nations and territories work together to promote peace, democracy, sustainable development, human rights and health, and to share ideas, knowledge and experience. It is hoped that learners from schools across Scotland will learn together to share creative solutions to design problems as we upcycle materials to create National flowers from the Commonwealth. These flowers will promote the Convention of the Rights of the Child and will be assembled to create a peaceful flower garden in Glasgow. This set of colour creativity challenges will give you the opportunity to make a creative and peaceful contribution to the 2014 countdown.
