Dear teachers,<\/p>\n

As the summer holidays approach, you might like to let your pupils know about some fantastic opportunities we have coming up to get involved with Glasgow Film Theatre, enhance employability skills, and develop interests in the media industries.<\/p>\n

Applications are now open for 15-17 year olds from Glasgow City Council Secondary Schools to join our Youth Team<\/a>. From September, the Team will start meeting once a week to put together the programme for the 2015 Glasgow Youth Film Festival. They will learn about film programming, organising events, and marketing, as well as developing lots of soft skills, such as group work, public speaking, writing, and more. Funding is available to help with travel costs if required.<\/p>\n

Glasgow Youth Film Festival has also started new monthly nights<\/a> for older children who are interested in learning more about media. In July, we have a Masterclass with the Creative Director of one of Glasgow’s fastest-growing TV production companies, Raise the Roof<\/a>. We’ll be joined in August by BAFTA-winning documentary filmmaker Michael McAvoy<\/a>, who will share his knowledge and answer questions.\u00a0Young people aged 15-21 can get discounted tickets for these events by signing up to GFT’s Youth Card<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For younger children, our Take 2<\/a> and Access Take 2<\/a> programme of FREE films for Glasgow Kidz<\/a> and Young Scots Card<\/a> holders plus accompanying adults continues every Saturday morning at GFT.<\/p>\n

We hope you will pass these opportunities on to your pupils. Our schools programme for the new term, including free screenings and events for Glasgow schools, will also be online very soon.<\/p>\n

A co-founder and Creative Director of Glasgow-based TV company Raise the Roof Productions, Sarah Walmsley has a wealth of industry experience. Her current credits include Building Dream Homes<\/em> on BBC 2 and Phil Spencer: Secret Down Under<\/em> for Channel 4. A former Head of Features at IWC Media, Sarah has also worked on shows such as Location, Location, Locatio<\/em>n and Time Team<\/em>. Raise the Roof is dedicated to developing talent in Scotland and is billed as one of the UK\u2019s fastest rising production companies \u2013 come along and hear the secrets behind its success.<\/p>\n

This event is \u00a32 for all GFT Youth Loyalty Card holders. The Card is free to sign up to for ages 15-21. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Documentary Masterclass with Michael McAvoy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael McAvoy is head of documentaries at STV and has acted as Executive Producer on titles such as Walking the Amazon<\/em>, Tobin \u2013 Portrait of a Serial Killer<\/em>, and In Search of Sherlock Holmes<\/em>. He most recently won a Scottish BAFTA for Best Documentary with a gripping retelling of the 1988 Piper Alpha rig catastrophe, Fire in the Night<\/em>. Michael will discuss his work, show clips from his extensive back catalogue, and give tips on working in the TV industry in Scotland.<\/p>\n

Glasgow Young Scot or Kidz Card holders get in FREE to these shows\u00a0when tickets are collected at the box office on the day.\u00a0All other tickets cost \u00a35.00. Each child\u2019s ticket admits one adult free of charge. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied. Take 2 screenings start promptly at 11.30am.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Due to overwhelming demand for Take 2 events GFT regrets that free tickets can only be issued on the day of the screening. This is to ensure that all tickets are used and people are not turned away unnecessarily. Tickets cannot be reserved in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Scottish Screen Archive<\/a> would like to hear from teachers and staff in local authorities who are interested in\u00a0learning and teaching using Scotland\u2019s screen heritage.<\/p>\n
