Hundreds of Scottish school pupils will be welding with chocolate and sculpting chairs from newspapers next week, while showcasing their own scientific innovations centred around everything from moths to the Mona Lisa.

Open to 11-19 year olds showcasing their impressive array of innovations, inventions and investigations underpinned by Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), The Big Bang Scotland is once again heading to Perth on Tuesday 12 June 2012.

Projects being judged on the day will range from a ‘forgery’ of the Mona Lisa to which sweets make the best glue, as well as investigations into suntan lotions, prolonging the life of freshly cut flowers, moths, glow sticks and even the Science of the Avengers!

Creative Identities – funding now available

Creative Identities is part of the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme, which reinvests the proceeds of crime back into communities to benefit Scotland’s young people. The Scottish Government has allocated £2.25 million over three years (2011-2014) to Creative Scotland to deliver Creative Identities programme.

The purpose of Creative Identities is to provide access to high quality experiential opportunities in dance, film and music for young people (0-25 years) in communities where there is an identified and demonstrated need.

Musical Futures believes music learning works best when young people are making music, and when their existing passion for music is reflected and built upon in the classroom. The Scottish and Credit Qualifications Framework Partnership (SCQFP) invites teachers and those working in community learning to come up with a new title for the guide currently known as the Schools Toolkit. This competition is open to all secondary school teachers and workers in community learning settings in Scotland and the deadline for entries is Friday 29 June 2012.

Approaches to Composing – guidance from professional composers now on Creativity Portal

The three films in this short series are aimed at pupils who are studying composing and arranging as part of an SQA course. Three composers, with varying backgrounds, offer a different take on approaches to composition.

Sound Editing in Audacity for Oral Historians added to Creativity Portal

A course created by Alan Coady of East Lothian that is intended for oral historians is now listed on the creativity Portal.
