National Youth Orchestra of Iraq comes to Scotland

British Council Scotland announces that this August, Scotland will welcome the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq on its first visit to the UK.

“The National Youth Orchestra of Iraq is a fantastic living example of peace and reconciliation by Iraqis, for Iraq and for the world. This year we are invited by the Scottish Government to hold our three week summer school during the Edinburgh Festival. NYOI’s diversity brings together young Arabs and Kurds, among others from across Iraq, to create real harmony together. We were founded by a brave 17-year-old Iraqi, Zuhal Sultan, just four years ago. Since then, the orchestra has developed with the tireless energy of Musical Director Paul MacAlindin. Though many musicians fled the country during the war, we have been determined to create a national youth orchestra for Iraq and the world by collaborating with British Council and German Friends of NYOI. We audition each year on youtube and many of us receive our only tuition at the annual summer school.”

7000 play away in Kay Park!

Undeterred by the wet weather, over 7000 people turned up to participate in this year’s annual Playday event at Kay Park, Kilmarnock, on Wednesday 1 August, making it one of the UK’s busiest events.
Children of all ages, from toddlers to teens, had a whale of a time – participating in a wide selection of activities including canoeing, mud slides, gunge pools, crate building, face painting, inflatable slides, quad bikes, den building and climbing wall.
While the 2012 Olympics were getting underway down in London, children in Kilmarnock were participating in taster sessions in their very own Olympic Zone, and many tried their hand at karate, taekwondo, weightlifting, judo, athletics and archery.
Playday provides an opportunity for the play sector to raise awareness about the importance of play in children’s lives, and celebrates a child’s right to play. The free event is run by East Ayrshire Council’s Leisure Development Services EA Positive Play team in Partnership with East Ayrshire Community Play Forum.

Pupils Document their Community in Exhibition inspired by German Photographer

A new exhibition of artwork by pupils from Turriff, Peterhead and Mintlaw Academies inspired by the German photographer August Sander has gone on display at Duff House, Banff.

The pupils have been working with local artists Amy Davenport and Fergus Connor to produce the body of work which will be exhibited at the north-east visitor attraction during August and September. Duff House is currently hosting an exhibition of portraits by Sander, regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential photographers. The pupils researched his works and techniques to document their own communities in a manner similar to that practiced by Sander in his portfolio ‘People of the 20th Century’.

Playday 2012 is TODAY!

The Playday 2012 campaign is Get out and play!

The Get out and play! campaign is calling on everyone to help make sure that children and young people across the UK have the time, freedom and space to play outdoors. As well as promoting children’s right to play, the campaign is highlighting that outdoor play is crucial for children’s health, well-being and happiness.

Playday is the national day for play, traditionally celebrated on the first Wednesday in August.

East Dunbartonshire Youth Music Forum 2012

If you have an interest in ensuring quality music opportunities are provided for young people in East Dunbartonshire, the Leisure and Culture Trust is looking to hear from you. The Trust has recently been successful in securing funding from Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative to form a Youth Music Forum in East Dunbartonshire. The forum will be established through an initial mapping of music provision highlighting the wealth of quality opportunities we currently offer and new wider opportunities to support young people to engage in music activity.  Following the music provision audit a series of events and professional development opportunities will be offered to teachers, music tutors, music groups and young people.
