Applications are now open for the 2013 European Language Label, and schools from across the UK are invited to apply. This year’s theme is ‘Innovation in Language Teaching and Learning’, and the Label is open to schools in the Primary and Secondary sector, as well as FE and HE institutions. This award is a great opportunity for the innovative work being done in languages in Scotland to be recognised across the UK and Europe.
The European Language Label (ELL) is an award for innovative language-learning projects. It rewards creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, motivate learners and make the best of available resources. Winning projects may use European Language Label on stationery and websites and, in addition, all winners receive prizes of books, vouchers or teaching materials from the Label sponsors. The awards are presented at a prize-giving ceremony on European Day of Languages, 26th September.

The Tron Theatre will stage an exciting new show Running on the Cracks , an adaptation by Andy Arnold of the Julia Donaldson book of the same name. This new show will be staged in February 2013 and is a co-production with Pilot Theatre Company, York. Running on the Cracks is a fast moving new play about runaways, identity, survival and how friendships can develop in the strangest situations.

The search for the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Poster has begun!
The Fringe Schools Poster Competition is open to all Scottish students aged 5 – 16. We are looking for a unique and eye-catching poster design that represents the variety and vibrancy of the Fringe – the rest is up to you.
Use our learning resources, including lesson plans linked to Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes, to introduce your pupils to the Fringe and inspire them to create winning posters!
The winning design will become the official poster for the 2013 Fringe and there are prizes of up to £750 for the top three artists and their schools. Your pupils could also be in with the chance of seeing their artwork displayed in an exhibition.

The annual National Storytelling Week is organised by the Society for Storytelling and aims to promote what it describes as ‘the oldest art form in the world’.
The Society provides advice on organising and publicising events including storytelling in schools, libraries, museums and art galleries.
The website has resources for developing storytelling skills and advice for teachers, as well as information about more than 150 storytellers throughout the UK.
Up to 23, year-long, paid Modern Apprenticeships with arts organisations aimed at young people aged 16 to 20 will be created in a partnership between Creative Scotland, Young Scot, Creative & Cultural Skills Scotland and Creative Skillset.
Young people taking part in the Modern Apprenticeships will study for vocational qualifications while gaining professional experience working for an arts organisation. Creative Scotland will offer employers up to £8,000 towards the salary of each apprentice, enabling organisations to provide positions.
Throughout the short course teachers will be supported by Shakespeare’s Globe’s educational specialist who has developed dynamic learning approaches to exploring Shakepeare’s plays with boys.
Their approach to supporting teachers will in turn aid secondary pupils to better understand characterization, themes and language.
Shakespeare’s Globe use a variety of techniques to explore and experiment with text; from the actor’s viewpoint and from the director’s, differing interpretations of the same play and interactive tasks to bring the text to life.
