Show Racism the Red Card’s Anti-Racism/Anti-Sectarianism Creative Competition

2013/2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the annual Show Racism the Red Card’s Anti-Racism/Anti-Sectarianism Creative Competition in Scotland. The Creative Competition is an integral part of the Show Racism the Red Card’s work in Scotland and has become a central feature in the calendar with almost one in five of Scotland’s schools having participated in the competition.  Entries are welcome from both individuals as well as class groups and the closing date for all entries is Friday 31st January 2014.

To enter, school and college students must develop a piece of creative work that gets across loud and clear the important message that racism and/or sectarianism is not welcome in Scotland.  This could be artwork, poetry, a short story, creative writing, music, a dance/drama performance, research project or multimedia presentation.

Competition winners will be invited to a star-studded award ceremony at Hampden Park in March, attended by the elite of Scottish football, to receive public acclaim for their work and receive their prizes.

Puppetry Workshop for teachers – linked to War Horse

Join us for this exciting behind the scenes look at puppetery as teachers work with Finn Caldwell who is one of the original War Horse puppeteers. Finn has directed the puppetry for productions of War Horse in the West End and in Australia.  He has also just directed the puppetry in The Light Princess at the National Theatre and is directing a children’s puppetry show called Elephantom in The Shed.

Astrobiology Summer Academy 13th-16th July 2014

An opportunity for biology and physics teachers to explore curiosity and ‘what if’ questions to creatively unlock the field of astrobiology.

The Astrobiology Summer Academy is a four day CPD programme (Sunday to Wednesday) for Biology AND Physics teachers to learn about the science of Astrobiology and work with researchers and lecturers to develop CfE lesson plans for topics such as ‘extremophiles’ (CfE Higher Biology) and ‘life in the Universe’ (SCN-3-06a, SCN 4-06a). The Skills Development Scotland Schools Competition – ‘Discover MY Scotland’

The Discover MY Scotland competition, which is being organised by Skills Development Scotland in conjunction with Education Scotland, Upskill People and Springboard, is asking every secondary school in Scotland to get together individuals, or groups of students, to design an online Discovery Trail for visitors wanting to discover the local area.

The Discovery Trail needs to have an interactive map containing an overview of your local area and why you think people should visit it.

Each school will receive a certificate from SDS and Springboard and the winning school, individual or team, will receive a day’s experience in a leading tourism venue plus a winner’s plaque.

Edinburgh – Creative Conversation Christmas Celebration

The Creative Conversation Christmas Celebration is on Wednesday 11th December 2013.This one has a slightly different focus and our Creative Catalysts are people who have been inspired by Creative Conversations to take action. Different ways of working, challenges to the norm, surprises, being outside the comfort zone and inspiring stories of deep pupil engagement can all be expected.

The Creative Conversation is titled ‘What Difference Does it Make?’ and that is exactly what you are invited to discuss with colleagues.

I would also like to thank all of you for coming to Creative Conversations and hope you can join Gillian Tee, David Cameron, Lucy Vaughan, Heather Lucchesi Eileen Littlewood and Lindsay Fullarton in what I am sure will be a very enjoyable conversation about Creativity across Learning.

Coffee is from 4pm and the Creative Conversation will begin at 4.30. Wine and seasonal nibbles will follow at around 6pm till 7ish.

Early Years staff, Starcatchers Creative Skills Training

Starcatchers is a pioneering organisation that specialises in performances and creativity for babies, toddlers and young children under the age of five in Scotland. In addition to creative development and tours of performances for this age group, Starcatchers also delivers programmes of training for Early Years practitioners.

From 2013-­‐15, Starcatchers is delivering a new pilot programme of Creative Skills Training for Early Years practitioners in Scotland. Funded by the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland, this programme offers a range of training sessions from artists, including theoretical as well as practical sessions.

The programme is for everyone working across the Early Years sector, including staff in nursery and family centre settings, health workers, childminders, and out-­‐of-­‐school and play workers.

The Training

The Creative Skills training is designed to be practical, accessible and inspirational, and will enable practitioners to explore their own creative and artistic capabilities in a supportive environment before introducing new ideas and techniques into their own Early Years practice.

Art forms explored will include drama, dance and movement, visual art, music, storytelling and puppetry.

New report on Assessing Creativity across many subjects available on Creativity Portal

Led by the University of Dundee and funded by Creative Scotland, this project gathered the views of three groups of professionals working within the expressive arts with the aim of identifying effective and innovative models of assessment of creativity. These models were documented and used to develop case studies in the format of a teaching resource for application across the whole curriculum. The resource was piloted and evaluated by the research and development team in collaboration with teachers and initial teacher education (ITE) providers.

The project develops the links between arts organisations, schools and ITE providers through data collection; shared analysis and evaluation; and through the development, application and dissemination of findings. In this way stronger partnerships have been established as recommended in Teaching  Scotland’s  Future  (Donaldson  2010)

inGenious competition brings STEM classes to life

A new competition has been launched to inspire the most creative teaching minds to translate their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects into exciting classroom experiences.

The inGenious competition – co-ordinated in the UK by Futurelab at NFER – calls for all teachers in Europe to help their pupils better see the link between their passions, the set of skills which make them possible, and the education paths leading to those skills.

The inGenious competition is open to all teachers at primary and secondary school level. Applications are open until 28 February 2014, and 30 finalists will be invited to attend the inGenious European Award Ceremony in Brussels later in the year.
