Digital Arts CLPL – FREE workshop – music, performance and technologies from Imaginate

Interested in digital arts and working with young people? Look no further. We have two great opportunities for you. Livescore Digital Workshop – 10 Sept (Platform) Lead by the livescore creative team: Greg Sinclair, Neil McGuire, Jassy Earl and Kyle McAslan. There are still places for this free workshop exploring some of the techniques that have been developed and used with young people throughout the livescore project, including:

  • developing performances using instruction scores
  • interacting with various digital technologies in performance
  • creating short performance films

Deadline: Monday 5 September More information here.   As the Crow Flies – 22 Oct (Platform) and 26 Oct (Traverse) Our Livescore project will culminate with a performance of As The Crow Flies. Created by Greg Sinclair and the Livescore creative team with children from Scotland and Belgium, this performance celebrates human connections and differences between individual people in diverse locations and features live music and digital technologies.

The show is suitable for 12+ From point to point, as the crow flies.There’s a man alone on stage in front of you. He’s here to do the performance. But there are also some children on a Scottish island, and some teenagers from Belgium; they want to be a part of the show too. And they have their own ideas about what is going to happen. Creative Skills Programme/qualification for Early Years practitioners

Since 2013, Starcatchers has been delivering Creative Skills training for Early Years practitioners in Scotland.  Funded by the Scottish Government, this programme offers a range of training sessions from Early Years artists which explore a range of art forms using a playful, open-ended, child centred approach. As evidenced through an independent evaluation undertaken for the pilot programme 2013-15 (Really Useful Knowledge), the training has been proven to deepen understanding of arts and creativity and to help participants integrate knowledge and skills gained into practice.

We are delighted that the Scottish Government has funded this free, innovative training for  Inverclyde, Dundee, Aberdeen and Midlothian in 2016-2017.

We are also launching the Creative Skills in Early Childhood practice SQA qualification, developed using the Creative Skills approach.  The course will be delivered in partnership with Glasgow Kelvin College from January 2017, and Glasgow City Council may be able to cover up to 50% of the £500 course fee.

#DareToDream: Invitation to All Schools

We  invite all schools to be a part of our storytelling festival local campaign this year, #DaretoDream. The campaign is an outreach initiative running from September to November, book-ending and running alongside our Scottish International Storytelling Festival (a ten day festival running from Friday 21st—Monday 31st October).

By taking part, your school will be contributing to a Scotland-wide initiative inviting and creating space for children to imagine their personal and collective futures, which in turn will build confidence to begin to make these aspirations and ambitions a reality.

We hope that this initiative is an easy way to progress creative learning in your school community with maximum impact, at the same time creating a positive and inclusive experience for pupils.

“Discover the stories of the past and dream the stories of the future. What are the stories of your local place? What stories would you tell to the world today, from the future of your dreams? Everything created must first be imagined: explore the possible and Dare to Dream!”

The principles of creative learning, active learning and inclusion are embedded in this project. Through dreaming, the liberating power of the imagination is open to everyone – neither language nor disability are barriers to participation. The campaign is relevant to the entire school and to every subject area. Activities will also help meet outcomes in both Literacy and Health and Wellbeing.

In an ever-changing world, we believe that it is vital that children are educated about their role and the value they have in shaping a vibrant and sustainable future. By setting learning in the context of your local school and focusing on issues relevant to your pupils, our #DareToDream campaign provides a great opportunity for you to encourage children to think about their right to participate, empowering and enabling them to become active citizens, both locally and globally. We provide the context for learning and suggest tasks and activities, but there is no limit on where this engaging topic could be taken in the classroom.

We will run a #DareToDream social media campaign during the main Scottish International Storytelling Festival. During this period we will make visible all contributions via our online platform. This is an opportunity to showcase your own school’s contribution with the wider community should you so wish in the form of a blog, video, photographs or otherwise.

As part of our social media campaign, we will have a special #DareToDream Day on Thursday 27th October.  On this day, we will encourage every creative citizen in Scotland to share a dream for the future on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the campaign hashtags. Our aim is to make visible Scotland’s collective imagination for all to see!

HOW TO TAKE PART:

We have made it as simple as possible for teachers to take part, with the options for engaging in more depth should the individual teacher so wish. In a secondary school context, we have suggested a simple activity that could take place in registration class.

Do You Know a Child Who Loves to Draw?

National Numeracy is partnering with Maths on Toast to launch their first summer holiday drawing competition. Children aged 13 and under are invited to design a number superhero. Entrants need to think about what qualities you need to be good at maths and how someone who is confident with numbers would think and act.

It’s open until Friday 16 September and all the information is available here. There are some great prizes up for grabs including Number Rumbler a brain-fizzing, fun game for families, and other maths goodies.

Glow Meet – The Horrible Science Show – Monday 22nd August @ 1.30pm

Join us at the Edinburgh International Book Festival to learn some mind-blowing facts about chaotic chemistry, bloody biology, and frightful physics as the Horrible Science books are brought to life. With Nick Arnold’s scary stories and explosive experiments and Tony De Saulles’ crazy cartoons (volunteers may be required…!). Expect a lot of laughs, a feast of foul facts and some seriously squishy science.

Dare to Dream

We are aware that creativity is high on the agenda and is part of many School Improvement Plans for the upcoming academic year. For the first time creativity is embedded in HGIOS 4 quality indicators.
