On Thursday 16 June 2011 Andy Stanton spoke to an audience of over 17000 P3-P5 children across the UK as part of Authors Live. Andy spoke about how he began writing Mr Gum, his love of books and even did a spot of beatboxing and rapping!The event was the first Authors Live event to be broadcast on the BBC red button.
Andy’s performance was watched by over ten thousand pupils across Scotland. You can watch the event again on Scottish Book Trust’s website. Additionally, free teaching resources for Andy’s Mr. Gum series (great for engaging reluctant readers) are available through the site.
Scottish Book Trust is currently on the lookout for three enthusiastic writers between the ages of 14 and 17 to participate in their Young Writers Awards. You could have the chance to be mentored by an established teen writerover a period of six months as well as meeting industry professionals and visiting a top London publisher.
Pandemic (Bucksburn Academy’s Steel Pan Band) are going to London to compete in the British Panorama (national steel band competition) and then take part in the biggest festival in Europe, the Notting Hill Carnival. They will be working jointly with RASPO (Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra).
The group of 16 senior pupils and two staff fly to London on 22 August to rehearse with RASPO for a week prior to taking part in Panorama on 27 August and Notting Hill Carnival on 28 and 29 August before returning to Aberdeen on Tuesday 30 August.
In November 2011 Engage and the Marsh Christian Trust will present an inaugural award to celebrate the achievements of those working in learning and education within gallery or visual arts contexts. Four awards of £500 each will be offered to the winning individuals, to be spent on their Continuing Professional Development.

The Moray Music Centre will once again be holding its annual Moray Schools Youth Orchestra summer school at Elgin Academy during the first week of the holidays.
A group of 25 S2 pupils from Queen Margaret Academy in Ayr performed to the world today as they took part in the National Theatre of Scotland Five Minute Theatre project, designed to celebrate the theatre’s fifth birthday.
The Five Minute Theatre project saw 235 five minute theatre pieces performed in a live online broadcast over a 24 hour period, including two by Queen Margaret Academy.

Education Scotland, the Scottish Government’s national development and improvement agency for education, was launched today.
Led by transitional Chief Executive Dr Bill Maxwell, the agency brings together the functions of Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS), HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIE), the National CPD Team and the Scottish Government’s Positive Behaviour Team.
The Creativity Portal is just one of the partnerships between the two national organisations leading the way in improving education opportunities and developing creativity in Scotland’s young people.
The Highland Council reports that pupils from seven Highland primary schools are meeting at Eden Court, Inverness this week to view the results of their documentary film making. Over the last year The Highland Council’s, Education Culture and Sport Service ran a cross curricular initiative for pupils and teachers. They had the opportunity to work with professional film makers from arts company Wildbird, to learn the skills and techniques involved in creating a documentary for video.
The pupils worked intensively to develop their own documentary videos and were involved in every stage of the creative process, from: selecting the subject and locations; creating story boards and scripts; designing interview questions; conducting interviews; operating the technical equipment such as cameras, lighting and sound; selecting appropriate music; and making animations and editing the work.
The National Galleries of Scotland’s new Programme for Schools 2011-12 is now available on the NGS website.
