With 370+ Followers on Twitter, 140+ subscribers by email, and visitors to the Creativity Portal itself still going strong the community of Scottish educators pledging their interest in putting Creativity at the heart of Curriculum for Excellence is expanding exponentially.

North Lanarkshire Council reports that stunning and original artwork produced by some of North Lanarkshire’s most talented and creative young people is being showcased at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge.
Young Scot, the national youth information and citizenship agency for Scotland, wants to hear about inspirational young people who have made a real difference in your local area. Nominations are now open for the Young Scot Awards 2012, sponsored by The Co-operative Foundation, which celebrate the achievements of 11 – 26 year olds who have made a positive impact on the lives of others.
There are 13 categories including Sport, Arts, Enterprise, Heritage and Volunteering, with nominations open to individuals and groups aged from 11-26. Three finalists in each of the 13 categories will be selected and will be invited to the glittering awards ceremony in Hilton Glasgow Hotel on 26 April where the winners will be revealed.

East Ayrshire Council reports on the challenge issued to all East Ayrshire pupils last week by top entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter to come up with the best new idea for a product, innovation or business. Ideas included everything from Happy Hampers and Ghost Tours, to sun-lotion impregnated baby wipes – and the amazing Plectraband (a plectrum attached to a wrist band). But winners on the day – chosen by the audience using instant electronic voting in a fast, exciting finish – were Auchinleck Academy’s Vicky Greig and Ross Anderson with their 99p MiMovie phone app idea. The app selects the perfect movie for you, based on your mood and situation at the time.
The King of Masks is a brilliant street performer who practices the change-mask opera art of bian lian. He laments that he has no grandchild to pass on his magical skills, so he adopts an orphan boy to become his apprentice. But the boy turns out not to be what he seems… A special film from China full of colour, fireworks and adventures!
On the day of the screening of the King of Masks live in Glasgow Glow TV be broadcasting the introduction to the event which lasts approximately 10 minutes. At 11.55am we will return live to Glasgow to take part in the live interactive workshop with Chinese opera singer and Ricefield workshop leader Fong Liu from St. Ninian’s High School who will be dressed in full Chinese costume. This workshop will last approximately 15-20 mins.

“Creativity doesn’t have to mean composing a symphony or a screenplay or a hit song. Writing an essay at school is a creative act. Finding a way to communicate with your teenagers is a creative act.
The National Galleries of Scotland Art Competition for Schools hopes to inspire children across the country with the National Galleries of Scotland’s superb collection of artworks. This year’s winning works will be displayed at the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery. There are six categories to choose from, links to Curriculum for Excellence and prizes to be won. The closing date is 4 May 2012.
Inverclyde Council reports that the closing date for the Gibson Award Art competition is 25 January. This competition is open to young artists in the Inverclyde area who may have left home to go to College or Art School, or may still be attending secondary school, or even left school and not attending any College or Art. The theme for this year is Figurative and or Portrait work in any style.
The next Creative Learning Seminar from Education Scotland/Creative Scotland will be taking place on Friday 20th January at Stirling Management Centre.
We are extending an invitation for up to ten staff from your Local Authority to attend this free event, and would like to make especially welcome teaching staff from a non-arts background – Creativity is here to empower teaching and learning across the curriculum.
The day will cover the following topics and will be led by Education Scotland Development Officers and HM Inspectors with varied specialisms in creativity as well as our guest speaker David Cameron.
