7000 play away in Kay Park!

Undeterred by the wet weather, over 7000 people turned up to participate in this year’s annual Playday event at Kay Park, Kilmarnock, on Wednesday 1 August, making it one of the UK’s busiest events.
Children of all ages, from toddlers to teens, had a whale of a time – participating in a wide selection of activities including canoeing, mud slides, gunge pools, crate building, face painting, inflatable slides, quad bikes, den building and climbing wall.
While the 2012 Olympics were getting underway down in London, children in Kilmarnock were participating in taster sessions in their very own Olympic Zone, and many tried their hand at karate, taekwondo, weightlifting, judo, athletics and archery.
Playday provides an opportunity for the play sector to raise awareness about the importance of play in children’s lives, and celebrates a child’s right to play. The free event is run by East Ayrshire Council’s Leisure Development Services EA Positive Play team in Partnership with East Ayrshire Community Play Forum.

Ardross art student takes on board game designing role

Ardross art student, Lewis Mardon has been busy during his summer holidays designing artwork for two eco-themed board games.
Pupils from Lochardil Primary School in Inverness were approached by the Council’s TEC Service’s Education & Enforcement Officer James Sanderson to see if they could come up with a board game to promote recycling and draw attention to what we do with our waste. The school’s Eco Committee took on the challenge with great enthusiasm and came up with not one but two boards games – “Park Panic” and “Bin It To Win It”.

9 year old photographer wins award

Winning photograph to appear in charity calendar.

Ben Roper, aged 9, pupil at Yarrow Primary School, has been successful in the Rotary Young Photographer Scotland Competition 2012 with his entry, ‘Quiet Place’.  The prize-giving ceremony was held yesterday evening, 28 June, in Glasgow.  Ben loves the outdoors and this is reflected in his photography, especially his winning photograph of snow and trees taken in the beautiful Borders.  The theme of this year’s Rotary photography competition was ‘The last days of winter’.

Please find below information about 2 Creative Conversations with Keir Bloomer. I have not intentionally missed anyone from this list so please pass on the invite to colleagues who may be interested.

Due to the popularity of the first Creative Conversation, we have decided to re-run the first Creative Conversation for colleagues who were unable to attend the first event in February. Titled ‘ This Could be the Start of Something Big’, the conversation looks at the big questions of the new curriculum, skills and creativity and will take place on Monday 18th June in the European Room, City Chambers:
4.00 – 4.30: Registration and coffee
4.30 – 5.30: Creative Conversation
5.30 – 6.30: continue the conversation with David, Keir and colleagues over a glass of wine and canapes
To book a place on this event please email me directly no later than Friday 15th June. Places are limited.

The sixth Creative Conversation of this session is also with Keir Bloomer and the title is ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’. This event will consider the key messages from the previous 5 Creative Conversation and ask the question ‘where do we go from here?’ The date is Tuesday 19th June, the format is as above and the venue (city centre) will be confirmed when your place is confirmed.
To book a place on this event please email me directly no later than Monday 18th June. Places are limited.

Finally, tomorrow I will send information and an invitation to an extra breakfast Creative Conversation with Eric Booth, internationally acclaimed leading figure in creativity and creative education. Eric, from America, is in Scotland from for one week only and we are fortunate in having him with us for the morning of the 21st June. You can read his article on creative learning in the May/June issue of Teaching Scotland.

I look forward to seeing you at 1, 2 or all 3 of these events.
