Portraits of Britain photographic competition

Are you a keen photographer? Can you capture the meaning of ‘social sciences’ and ‘society today’ in a single picture? If so, the ESRC Portraits of Britain photographic competition could be for you.

This free competition aims to capture images of what life in Britain means today. There are eight categories to enter, including an open category for young people.

The competition is run in partnership with the tenth annual ESRC Festival of Social Science <http://www.esrc.ac.uk/news-and-events/events/festival/index.aspx>  and the winning entries will be showcased at the ESRC’s 2012 flagship Festival event in London this autumn.

Reminder – Marks on the Landscape National challenge: Design a billboard for Scotland


There is still time for learners to enter this Education Scotland challenge to design a double-sided billboard to be seen by people entering and leaving Scotland.

The design challenge is being run through the Marks on the Landscape website <http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/marksonthelandscape/index.asp> , an interdisciplinary learning resource focused on creativity skills, within the learning context of the land regeneration project Fife Earth. The challenge is aimed at those working within second, third and fourth curriculum levels.

Simple Acts is about inspiring individuals to use small, everyday actions to change perceptions of refugees. Through Glow TV you can join weekly events that highlight individual acts such as learning about a refugee experience, cooking a dish from another country and finding out about the new Spirit Project. The series is on every Wednesday morning at 11 am.

This performance celebrates the life and legacy of Jimmy Reid, the trade unionist and one

of the leaders of the 1971-2 Work-in at the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders. Created by

Glasgow-based theatre company Visible Fictions, it is part of a project coinciding

with the 40th anniversary of the Work-in. The project addresses the meaning of work

in contemporary Scotland, specifically in relation to Clydeside.


Youngsters invited to take part in Glenrothes photo competition

Young people in Glenrothes are being asked to celebrate their town’s public art in a photo competition that will culminate in an exhibition in Rothes Halls this summer. Historic Scotland has recently recognised the importance of Glenrothes public art by listing several sculptures, and the agency has also produced a free downloadable booklet offering maps and trails. These unique art works are being recognised by Historic Scotland with a competition that aims to reflect the diverse and exciting range of 140 public sculptures, which have become integral to the town’s character.

The “My Place” photo competition is open in two categories, under 16 years old, and 16 and over, with prizes for all winners. Old meets New at Huntingtower Castle

Perth and Kinross Council reports that pupils from Our Lady’s RC Primary School in Letham visited Huntingtower Castle on Thursday 26 April 2012 to hand over a wall hanging they have made, inspired by their recent studies of the Castle and its history.

Our Lady’s Primary School have been participating in Living Communities, an exciting project funded by Perth & Kinross Council and the Gannochy Trust, with the aim of bringing local heritage alive.

Poetry competition means pupils are well-versed on recycling


Midlothian Council has launched a poetry competition for primary pupils in the county. Prizes include a visit to a factory to see what happens to materials collected for recycling and to find out more about what they can be turned into, a recycling goody bag and the chance for pupils to star in their own video reading their award-winning entry. The winning poem will also be printed in the council’s waste aware trailer which will be visiting gala days across the county this summer.

First stitch on record-breaking Great Tapestry of Scotland


On Friday 23 March the first stitch on what is believed to be the longest embroidered tapestry in the world was sewn at the Scottish Parliament by the Presiding Officer Tricia Marwick MSP. The Great Tapestry of Scotland will illustrate the history of Scotland and will involve hundreds of volunteer stitchers. It is one of the biggest community arts projects in the world and Holyrood will exhibit the completed record-breaking 141-metre-long embroidered tapestry in August 2013.
