Scotland’s Stories website launched

The strange and fantastical stories of Scotland have inspired writers, artists and poets for centuries. Scotland’s Stories website aims to inspire children and young learners to explore this rich vein of literary and cultural heritage.

It provides a variety of beautifully illustrated classic Scottish tales, with background information, transcripts of all stories as well as fantastic audio and video versions of the stories as told by some of Scotland’s finest storytellers.

A Scottish Wave of Change National Story Competition

A Scottish Wave of Change is a Scottish-wide project about the future, and about stories and change.

The national story competition organised by A Scottish Wave of Change in association with the Sunday Herald invites people from all across Scotland to respond to the question – what values should shape the future Scotland?

To do this we invite people to submit a work of fiction –whether short story, poem, song or other short writing form, of up to 2,500 words in English, Scots or Gaelic.

Your piece should be set in the Scotland of the near-future – and we leave it to your imagination and creativity how you interpret this.

The best contributors will feature in a book published in spring 2011 and receive a publishing fee. Short-listed stories will be featured on this website.

GLOW in the snow

A number of Scottish local authorities have been praised for using innovative teaching methods – despite their schools being closed.

Aberdeenshire Council has arranged a number of learning activities through GLOW – the schools intranet – and West Lothian has also posted a wide range of work for pupils.

‘One Minute Movie Competition’ for 14-19 year olds

Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2011 has joined up with Chew TV again to launch our very successful ‘One Minute Movie Competition’.

The competition is open to anyone in Scotland aged 14 – 19 years old.

This year’s competition is specially themed – we’re looking for films under 60 seconds about the best kept secrets in your neighbourhood! The films can be about your favourite childhood memory, where your friends hang out every weekend or anything unique to where you live. The judges are looking for all types of creative and imaginative films: comedies, dramas, animations, documentaries.

The best filmmakers will be rewarded with special prizes! One of the prizes will be an Alienware laptop worth £800, kindly supplied by Muvizu for Best Individual film.

The winning entries will be announced at special ceremony during GYFF and the winners will also be invited to screen their films at The Arches.

The closing date for entries to be uploaded is Tuesday 1 February 2011 at 6pm.

Shared Practice for Creative Teachers – Scottish Book Trust Online Teacher in Residence is an online community aimed at teachers in Scotland with a particular interest in creative approaches to literacy, language and writing within Curriculum for Excellence.

Here, at the hub of the community, teachers will be able to access and share ideas, resources and various CPD opportunities with colleagues from across the country.

Robots bring engineering to life for Abercromby pupils

Clackmannanshire Council announces that pupils at Abercromby Primary will show off their science skills when they ‘Engineer a Robot’ this week.


Scottish-based IBM volunteers will be visiting the Tullibody school on Tuesday 23 November where they will demonstrate that technology can be fun as they work with the P7 classes.

First Steps in Screenwriting at The RSAMD

Following the success of our Filmworks course, First Steps in Screenwriting, earlier this year, we will be running it again starting in January 2011. The ten-week course is suitable for young people aged 15 to 19.

Glasgow Youth Film Festival and BIG GIVE launch celebration

Monday December 6 at 4.30pm.

The schools programme launch will take place in the upstairs bar of the Glasgow Film Theatre. We’d love it if you could join us.

Tempting festive refreshments will be provided! After the launch, we’ll be offering complimentary tickets to the 5.40pm screening of The Social Network (12A, captioned).

We’ll be unveiling the schools lineup for GYFF 11, which features premieres, workshops and special events for nursery to S6, along with teaching resources tailored to Curriculum for Excellence. We will also introduce our youth ambassadors, who helped select events for the Festival and will tell you about our fundraising campaign The Big Give.

The launch is a perfect opportunity to socialise with teachers who love film and to be the first to book GYFF 11 events. Thanks to Glasgow City Council Education Services, GYFF 11 schools events are FREE to Glasgow schools!
