YDance Update and inclusive dance practice training

This month we had a great time delivering LeaderFest and Jump In and we’ve got two great new courses for dance teachers, students & recent graduates.

LeaderFest Success…

Over 100 Dance Leaders from 14 local authorities flocked to Edinburgh College last weekend to take part in LeaderFest.

We put this event together to celebrate all of the Dance Leaders in Scotland who have achieved an Award in Dance Leadership through the YDance Active project.

We organised a full day of dance with Waacking, Fosse and Swing dance workshops, inspiring performances by – Ihayami Fusion, Mini Jackers, The Honeys and the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland, and even an Awards ceremony to celebrate those Dance Leaders who have shown outstanding Leadership skills.

The event ended with a mass Flashmob performance by all.  Watch it here.

Jump In…

We were thrilled to deliver the first Jump In performance of 2015 at the Lochgelly Centre in Fife.

Our dance tutors spent weeks working with classes from 6 different primary schools in Fife to create an outstanding performance by all. Parents, relatives and friends filled the auditorium to see 6 fun and unique performances created around a ‘Position in Space’ theme.   We delivered this particular performance in partnership with Fife Youth Arts Hub and are now running weekly dance sessions at the Lochgelly Centre for young people in primaries 4 – 7 and aged 12 – 18. Sign-up & join in

We created Jump In to develop youth dance activities in areas with limited provision for young people aged 7 – 11.  The project is funded by the Creative Scotland Time to Shine fund.

Inclusive Dance Practice Day…

We’re delivering another great course for dance practitioners who want to expand their knowledge and develop their teaching skills for delivering dance with children and young people with additional support needs.

This one day course covers:

– Methods of inclusive practice

– Creative ideas for pupils with and without

additional support needs

Creative Conversations in Edinburgh – Wednesday 26th November

As well as the ‘big’ Creative Conversations Edinburgh City Council are also planning a number of Creative Conversations that take as the stimulus for conversation, a piece of creative work. We first tried this in February with a drama performance by award winning children’s theatre company Catherine Wheels. Not just drama teachers but many people from different backgrounds attended. The animated conversation that followed was testimony to the potential for art to influence learning across all curriculum areas. The feedback was excellent.

Date for your diary:

The next of this type of Creative Conversation is on Wednesday 26th November starting with coffee at 4pm for 4.30 with wine and nibbles at around 5.30. The stimulus for discussion is The Heavenly View which is a dance piece first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe this year and based upon Mahler’s 4th Symphony. The choreography was inspired by the voices and ideas of children in Edinburgh primary schools: Canal View, Hillwood, Ratho and Gylemuir. The approach was unconventional in that the starting point was the learners’ ideas, from which the piece was choreographed. Responses to the work will be shared from the primary schools including poetry and visual art as well as the chance to explore the interdisciplinary and creative learning opportunities arising experiences from an arts stimulus.

The costume designs by Edinburgh College of Art 2014 graduates, Emily Beaney and Kate Hamilton, also took their inspiration from the pupils ideas. The dancers include current and alumni students from the MSc Dance Science and Education and the Advanced Training Programme at Morningside Dance Academy.

Please get back to carla.hay@edinburgh.gov.uk directly if you would like to attend and she’ll send full venue details and confirmation of your place.

Creative Conversations are for Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian and we are happy for non-Edinburgh/Lothian folk to come if we have space.

National Working Group for Dance

The national working group for Dance met on 8 May at Optima Glasgow.

The main focus of the group is:

• to establish what the barriers are to the delivery of Dance

• to improve communication within the dance community

• to establish a network of contacts within the dance community

Con Morris from Education Scotland gave the group an insight into how Glow could be used to establish better communication and links. How a “Blether account” would allow practitioners to support each other and share good practice.

Show Racism the Red Card’s Anti-Racism/Anti-Sectarianism Creative Competition

2013/2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the annual Show Racism the Red Card’s Anti-Racism/Anti-Sectarianism Creative Competition in Scotland. The Creative Competition is an integral part of the Show Racism the Red Card’s work in Scotland and has become a central feature in the calendar with almost one in five of Scotland’s schools having participated in the competition.  Entries are welcome from both individuals as well as class groups and the closing date for all entries is Friday 31st January 2014.

To enter, school and college students must develop a piece of creative work that gets across loud and clear the important message that racism and/or sectarianism is not welcome in Scotland.  This could be artwork, poetry, a short story, creative writing, music, a dance/drama performance, research project or multimedia presentation.

Competition winners will be invited to a star-studded award ceremony at Hampden Park in March, attended by the elite of Scottish football, to receive public acclaim for their work and receive their prizes.

For further information please visit the Show Racism website.
