This event will look at the potential of Glow to support a variety of classroom initiatives eg transition, inter disciplinary learning, recording achievement and sharing success, etc. This will be a practical event with support from the National Glow team and the opportunity to work with colleagues across local authorities and sectors.
The course is residential at Stirling University Management Centre. All accommodation costs and travelling expenses to Stirling will be met by Learning and Teaching Scotland. Supply cover will be the responsibility of attendee’s school.
The shortlist for the 2010 Film G Awards have been announced ahead of this year’s awards ceremony which will be held in The Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow on Friday 18 February 2010.
Western Isles schools were well represented again in the competition, which is run by MG ALBA and is in its third year. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar co-ordinated Gaelic script writing, filming and editing training for Western Isles schools. In collaboration with Community Education and Museum nan Eilean, Sgoil Lionacleit has secured two nominations for ‘Best Script’ and ‘Best Interpretation of Competition Theme’.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Convener, Alex MacDonald said:
“I am delighted that the Western Isles pupils are again well represented in this nation-wide competition. In Film G’s inaugural year, Western Isles schools performed well and Castlebay Community School emerged as winners of the ‘Best Film’ category with Sgoil Lionacleit winning ‘Best Script’ at last years awards ceremony. This is an excellent competition which develops the skills of our youngsters, and their schools and community groups are to be commended for their hard work. It only serves to highlight the opportunities in the Gaelic media and creative sector and it is encouraging that we have so many talented youngsters in our islands. I wish all the pupils every success at the prize giving”.
The 2011 AMES ConferenceBreaking Barriers: Multimodal and Media Literacy in the Curriculum for Excellence will take place at Abertay University in Dundee on Saturday 14 May 2011. It will address the issues raised in the recently published position which can be downloaded at www.mediaedscotland.org.uk
The keynote speaker is leading media education researcher Professor David Buckingham of the University of London’s Institute of Education. There will also be a range of workshops allowing primary, secondary and further education educators to explore unfamiliar pedagogies or reinvigorate familiar ones. East Ayrshire Council reports that top performing companies travelled to Kilmarnock last week to help young people find out about jobs in the creative industries. And Scottish Opera’s Director of Education and Outreach Jane Davidson said: “It’s really important to show young people that they don’t need to be performers to work in the arts. There are many avenues to explore and I think we opened their eyes to the possibilities. I really hope we are able to do this again.”
Ninety fourth-year pupils from five local secondary schools took part in a range of workshops at the National Performing Companies event in the Palace Theatre. The youngsters learned not only about performing, but also about lesser-known ‘backstage’ work in production and set design; wardrobe and make-up; and publicity and graphic design.
The pupils from James Hamilton, Kilmarnock, Stewarton, Auchinleck and Cumnock Academies attended either a morning or afternoon session of activities to give them practical experience in all aspects of stage and screen performance, learning from professionals working in the field.
