Celebrate World Book Day! – March 1st

Talk with the author of ‘Horrid Henry’ through Glow TV and find other online resources to help celebrate World Book Day. World Book Day is held on March 1 and was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.
Speak with Francesca Simon, the author of the phenomenally successful Horrid Henry books, on Glow TV at 11am or at 1.15pm on Thursday March 1. The event is suitable for P1-P7 learners (age 5-12) and fans of the Horrid Henry series.

SLF Creative Learning…Creative Thinking – Call for Participation now open

The Scottish Learning Festival 2012 will take place on Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 September in the SECC, Glasgow. The theme for SLF 2012 is Creative Learning…Creative Thinking

The Scottish Learning Festival 2012 will offer practitioners opportunities to learn more about the importance of creative skills for themselves and for their learners. SLF 2012 will enable practitioners to develop skills and expertise to support creative learning and teaching across the curriculum through sharing information, highlighting innovation and showcasing best practice. SLF 2012 also provides continuing professional learning opportunities in line with recommendations set out in Teaching Scotland’s Future.

The Call for Participation is now open and full details of the theme along with an online submission form are available on the SLF website .

Scottish Youth Theatre announces SQA accredited six-week Summer Festival course for participants aged 16-25.

Scottish Youth Theatre is proud to introduce an exciting new six-week summer course, offering a vocational alternative to school and college qualifications, and focussing on active, practical learning for young people.

The newly SQA accredited Performance and Production Learning Programme will this year run alongside Scottish Youth Theatre’s annual flagship event, Summer Festival, and is open to applicants from all over Scotland and beyond aged 16 – 25.

Successful completion of the course will afford participants a qualification that sits between the Higher/Advance Higher level on the SCQF worth a total of 29 credit points.

The Performance and Production Learning Programme is the first course of its kind in Scotland.

“The company is delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to achieve an accredited practical qualification to all young people in Scotland especially those who may not have been able to achieve an academic award in a formal set up”, says Mary McCluskey, Scottish Youth Theatre Artistic Director and Chief Executive. “Having the SCQF and SQA seal of approval reflects the intensity and calibre of the course. And the award to be gained on completion of the course gives participants credit points as proof of their dedication to the course”.

Now in its 36th year, Summer Festival offers performance courses for young people from all over Scotland ages 8-25. All courses have a clear progression route leading to the Performance and Production Course.

Former participant Andrew Still, recently cast in Hollyoaks, fully recommends getting involved in Summer Festival to other like minded young people. “I’ve taken part in two Summer Festivals and they really opened my eyes to the world of performing. I think it’s so exciting that participants can now achieve a qualification at the end of the course. It’s satisfying but a lot of hard work. The chance to gain an award that reflects this will appeal to many young performers”.

Parents of school children in East Dunbartonshire can now be kept up to date with the latest news and events from their child’s school following the launch of a new app for iPhones and Smart phones.
East Dunbartonshire Council is the first local authority to have its own bespoke branded application – EDC Schools – which is free to download from the iPhone app store and android market place.

Creative project scoops Olympic award – Schools’ Inspired Project Recognised by London 2012

A design and enterprise competition involving pupils from North Lanarkshire secondary schools, has been awarded the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire Programme. The Design Enterprise Challenge gives third year Art and Design and Business Education pupils the opportunity to compete against each other using the facilities and expertise of the City of Glasgow College to produce and market a new product.

Details of next month’s Fife Science Festival have been launched. For the first time in its history, Fife Science Festival has been extended to Dunfermline, with events also heading to St Andrews, Buckhaven, Burntisland, Glenrothes, Tayport and Kirkcaldy.

Funded by the Scottish Government, the Edina Trust and Podium (the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games), the festival will involve a diverse range of free events for schools and the general public.

A week-long science week will also held at Denbeath Primary School in Buckhaven with engineering insights at Adam Smith College in Glenrothes and wireless wonders at Museum of Communication at Burntisland. Secondary school pupils will also get the chance to make a prize-winning robot, while a lecture will explore what life would be like without evolution.
