Social entrepreneurs enter the ‘dragon’s den’ with ideas for employing young people in creative industries in Glasgow

Glasgow is one of six European cities participating in an initiative – Future City Jobs – that aims to tackle youth unemployment using the creative and cultural industries.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland hosted a workshop event on 23 and 24 November which explored ideas for employment, training and placement in these industries for a wide variety of young people. The event programme included a ‘Dragon’s Den’-style event where a panel listened to presentations before identifying the best proposals.

The Scottish Parliament has brought together 16 new graduates from Scotland’s four renowned art schools to create an exhibition – called ‘Design & Democracy’ – to showcase how inspired design can be both life enhancing and creative.

The exhibition is the first to combine works from all four of Scotland’s art schools: Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee; Edinburgh College of Art; Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen; and The Glasgow School of Art.

The exhibition will be housed within the Parliament’s Main Hall from the end of November 2011 to March 2012. It is the longest running exhibition ever to be held at the Parliament and is supported by Creative Scotland.

Young musicians and singers from across the Highlands received a standing ovation on Saturday after performing the Scottish premiere of a new musical commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund – “One Sun One World.”
As part of the WWF-UK’s 50th anniversary celebrations the environmental charity commissioned a new musical reflecting the issues highlighting its work around the globe.

Latest support materials : Learning through sketchbooks in art and design

Air Iomlaid (On Exchange) was a partnership project bringing two schools and their communities together with practising artists to explore their outdoor environments through art and language. The lead artist described the project as undergoing a process of ‘getting fit’ artistically.

This resource is intended for primary and secondary teachers who want to build confidence in discussing the visual elements of the art and design curriculum with learners and colleagues. Young scot scoops national film competition

A film about life in Buckie for a group of skateboarding youngsters has won top prize in a national competition. The three-minute film was chosen as the best from entries to a British Film Institute competition, launched to celebrate legendary film maker Ken Loach’s 75th birthday. Entries from hundreds of young creators inspired by the British filmmaker came from across the UK, and the winner was announced at a ceremony in London’s Southbank on Friday 11 November.

Free family events take place on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November at the Scottish Parliament to celebrate St Andrew’s Day (Wednesday 30 November).
The Parliament, in partnership with the Glasgow Science Centre, has created a programme of events to inspire children and adults to invent, innovate and investigate science and the challenges of design while learning more about the Scottish Parliament. Visitors will also get the chance to view a new exhibition dedicated to the principles of design and democracy.
