  1. Hello Shanghai Blog

The first year elective class here at Grange Academy have been looking at the Shanghai Expo, and China as a whole with a view to creating a school magazine which highlights the links between China and Scotland.

We would like to ask a few questions and look closer at how the Shanghai Expo will further build the relationship between Scotland and China.

We also have three questions we would like to ask in Chinese:

What Scottish products are exhibited at the ShangHai Expo?

Can you send some pictures of the Scotland stall at the Shanghai Expo?

Which Scottish products are the Chinese most interested in?

    Thank you

    Grange Academy

  2. Glenn,

Thank you for answering our first set of questions. We now have some more and would like to focus on travel and the environment .

How are the Chinese trying to make the Expo environmentally friendly?

What sort of transport is available to the Expo?

Why did Britain choose the seed cathedral to represent itself?

    Thank you,
    Grange Academy

  3. I visited Beijing in July of this year and believe there is a great rivalry between Beijing as the political capital and Shanghhai as the economic capital. How many visitors have visited the Expo so far and how many of them have been Beijingers?

  4. Hi Rachel,
Thanks for the question! I agree there might be a bit of competition but I don’t think either city likes to be compared to the other one because each views itself as totally unique and incomparable.
I’ve been thinking about how to explain it, and I think it’s sort of like Washington DC and New York: one is the capital of a country and the other prides itself on its economic and cosmopolitan status. Both are icons in their own right and probably don’t spend too much time thinking about how they compare to the other.
To answer your question, as of today there’s been over 57 million visitors to the Expo. I wasn’t able to find any official numbers on visitors from Beijing, although I was able to call a few friends that live in Beijing. Their feeling is that Expo isn’t that big of a thing for them, but that’s more because it’s in another city. Although some people do come to the Expo via Beijing, not everybody will make the trouble to visit another city for several days. So I think if people don’t come to the Expo it’s mostly disinterest and nothing really to do with competitive spirit. Thanks!

  5. Glenn,

We would like to ask further questions on environmentalism.

What buildings are to be kept after the expo has finished?

What will happen to the building material that is taken down after the expo is over?

    Thank you,
    Grange Academy

  10. Hello Glenn,
this is David McClure from John Paul Academy, from Glasgow.

Sorry that these questions are late, the weather in Scotland has caused chaos in the build up to Christmas.

There are a couple of pupils here looking to ask you some questions about family life in China. I will hand you over to them.

How many people are in your family?

What is family life like on a daily basis?

What does your family do for entertainment?

What does your family eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

    Do you have any pets?

How does your family celebrate special occassions e.g,birthdays, christmas?

    Thanks, Jodie and Adele.

  11. Hi Glenn, our questions are all about festivities in China:
    1) How does China celebrate Christmas?
    2) Over here, obviously we go mad for turkey, but what foods are traditionally eaten in China during Christmas time?
    3) Are there any traditional Chinese Christmas carols?
    4) Do Chinese children put out stockings for santa?
    5) What would be a typical household celebration of Chinese New Year?
    6) On the 3rd of Feb it will now be the year of the Rabbit. What exactly does this mean? Will it have an effect on the type of year people will have?
    7) Again, (you might see we love food!) are there any very traditional meals or delicacies eaten (or drunk) during Chinese New Year?
    8) Are there any traditional stories or legends surrounding Chinese New Year?
    9) Before Christmas we shop till we drop but how do the Chinese prepare for their festivities?
    10) When we were in China we heard about the giving of ‘lucky money’ what exactly is this and is there any other traditional presents given over Chinese New Year?
Many thanks and we look forward to your reply!
