Getting it Right for Every Child

Wellbeing sits at the heart of the Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC) approach and reflects the need to tailor the support and help that children, young people and their parents are offered to support their wellbeing.

A child or young person’s wellbeing is influenced by everything around them and the different experiences and needs they have at different times in their lives.

What is wellbeing?

To help make sure everyone – children, young people, parents, and the services that support them – has a common understanding of what wellbeing means, we describe it in terms of eight indicators.

The eight wellbeing indicators are commonly referred to by their initial letters – SHANARRI.

GIRFEC information from Glasgow City Council’s Health Improvement Team

There is a new Young people’s guide to wellbeing launched.

The website is the latest resource to explain the Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) approach that underpins the new legislation and is being rolled out across local authority services.

The website provides clear information for young people on wellbeing – and what the adults in their life need to do to help them – as well as information on accessing support if needed.

The idea of GIRFEC comes from the Scottish Government , but the site is by and for young people to show what is being done in schools and elsewhere to support their well being.

Learning about GIRFEC in the Classroom

All of our children at Thornwood learn about how to promote and support their own wellbeing and that of others. Each month in school we focus on a particular SHANARRI indicator and use resources from the Healthy Schools website to learn about.
