Learning Approaches

Play Pedagogy

At St. Vincent’s Primary School, we believe children learn best when they are active, curious, and engaged. Our play pedagogy is embedded in Primary 1 and Primary 2, and this year (2025–26) we are extending it across the school, with a special focus on Primary 3.

Through play, children explore, investigate, and make choices, developing independence, creativity, collaboration, and confidence. Teachers support and guide learning, allowing pupils to lead their own experiences and engage in meaningful, hands-on activities.

By embedding play pedagogy across the school, we aim to foster curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning in all pupils.

Digital Learning

At St. Vincent’s Primary School, we aim to equip our pupils to be Confident Individuals, Successful Learners, Responsible Citizens, and Effective Contributors in an increasingly digital world. Digital learning supports communication, collaboration, and creativity across all areas of the curriculum.

Our approach aligns with Glasgow City Council’s Digital Strategy, which focuses on three key areas: Digital Leadership and Culture, Digital Services, and Digital Foundations. These priorities support our school aims to:

  • Raise attainment and achievement

  • Enhance leadership and teaching

  • Make the best use of resources

Digital learning also helps families engage with and support their child’s learning and development. Please ensure you are familiar with the school’s Acceptable Use Policy, which can be found here.

Outdoor Learning

Learning takes place both in the classroom and in our extensive outdoor spaces. We are fortunate to have many areas for outdoor learning, including two outdoor classroom areas — one in the infants’ playground and the other in the Field of Dreams.

The Field of Dreams is our outdoor garden, where children can climb trees, explore gardening, plants, and vegetables, complete teaching and learning tasks, and build dens using our den building kits.

Every class has wetsuits for all learners, allowing children to take part in outdoor learning activities in all weathers. Every class also uses our Astro turf pitch once a week for PE, providing further opportunities for active learning and physical development.

Outdoor learning supports wellbeing, teamwork, creativity, and real-life learning experiences, giving children the freedom to explore, investigate, and connect with nature while developing their skills and confidence.

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL)

At St. Vincent’s, IDL is an important part of the curriculum, and our staff work hard to make learning relevant and engaging for all our children.  IDL is pupil-led, exploring the interests and ideas of our learners. We have recently added new novel sets to support topics and ensure all children can see themselves reflected in the stories and texts they read.

We make the most of our local area, with trips to farms, bookshops, cinemas, and author visits, bringing learning to life and helping children make real-world connections.  As well as local trips, we continue to build strong partnerships with charities and community organisations, further enriching learning opportunities.

In line with Glasgow City Council’s Developing the Young Workforce programme, we place a special focus on STEM. Children have the chance to learn coding, program robots, and take part in hands-on activities, helping them develop important skills for the future. Through these approaches, we aim to create an engaging, supportive, and stimulating learning environment where every child can develop academically, socially, and personally.
