Numeracy & Mathematics

At St. Mungo’s Primary School, we are confident that our Action On Achievement will enable our learners to: develop a secure understanding of the concepts, principles and processes of numeracy and mathematics and apply these in different contexts; develop a deeper sense and understanding of numeracy and maths through applying concrete and pictorial approaches to more abstract concepts; be able to use the four operations when solving problems and make effective use of mental strategies and written skills; understand the importance of financial awareness, money management and effective data handling and the impact mathematics has on society; develop an awareness of how imaginative and effective use of technology can be used to enhance the development of skills and concepts, making links across the curriculum; demonstrate increasing independence in their ability to demonstrate, link, transfer and apply a range of skills in a variety of increasingly more challenging contexts.

Mathematics is important in everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives. Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplifying and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions (Principles and Practice).

Across the school, we ensure that Numeracy and Maths is an integral part of the four contexts for learning: we have a range of opportunities that enhance personal achievement, and we value and plan for interdisciplinary learning as a way of developing breadth, challenge and application. Numeracy and Maths is embedded in the life and work of our school community. The four contexts help develop our learners’ knowledge, skills and attributes.

There are many Maths related activities and Apps you can use at home and these will be added to as we continue to support home learners.
