Click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/stfrancisoa\/uploads\/sites\/9229\/2020\/06\/16142841\/Starting-School-Reading-list.pdf\">here<\/a> to access a range of books being read on You Tube to help you discuss starting school with your child. (16\/6\/2020)<\/p>\n<p>Parents\/carers often ask what skills are needed to help their child hold a pencil properly. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/stfrancisoa\/uploads\/sites\/9229\/2020\/06\/19125152\/gross-motor-skills-explained.ppt\">Click here<\/a> for more information on the motor skills needed for good pencil control which leads to good handwriting. (19\/6\/2020)<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of skills to practise at home that will help you when you start school in August:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>help with jobs around the house to practise following simple instructions and encourage independence<\/li>\n<li>Going to the toilet independently<\/li>\n<li>washing your hands correctly and throughout the day<\/li>\n<li>opening their own snacks and water bottles<\/li>\n<li>using cutlery at home when eating their meals<\/li>\n<li>Writing and recognising their own name<\/li>\n<li>Putting on their jacket and zipping it up<\/li>\n<li>Putting on school jumpers and cardigans<\/li>\n<li>Ensure all belongings are clearly labelled<\/li>\n<li>Play dice games and provide opportunities for turn taking<\/li>\n<li>Using scissors safely<\/li>\n<li>Holding a pencil properly<\/li>\n<li>Singing nursery rhymes and reading stories at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Understanding the full value of nursery rhymes and songs will open up the learning opportunities for children and help create a positive attitude towards language.<\/p>\n<h4>So why is singing nursery rhymes and songs important;<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Children\u00a0learn new words<\/li>\n<li>Develop their non-verbal communications skills<\/li>\n<li>Learn early maths skills<\/li>\n<li>Children understand how words are formed<\/li>\n<li>Enables children to copy actions<\/li>\n<li>It boasts children language communication and literacy skills<\/li>\n<li>Helps develop children\u2019s social, skills<\/li>\n<li>Children learn about different beats and rhythms<\/li>\n<li>Provides the opportunity for children to value language and become confident learners.<\/li>\n<li>Creates a close relationship between adult and child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important that adults are confident when singing nursery rhymes and songs as this will be portrayed to the children. If adults are having fun children are more likely to respond.<\/p>\n<h4>Adult\u2019s role in singing nursery rhymes and songs;<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Be confident<\/li>\n<li>Sing songs slowly and clearly<\/li>\n<li>Use a clear tone<\/li>\n<li>Use props to support the songs<\/li>\n<li>Involve children<\/li>\n<li>Use actions, pictures or widget symbol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Is singing nursery rhymes and songs included in your everyday routine? Singing nursery rhymes doesn\u2019t just have to be during song time why not share a song or two during nappy time or when children are sitting down for lunch.
