School Roll

Our school has a roll of 202 pupils. We currently have 8 classes from Primary 1 to Primary 7. Some classes comprise of single year groups and others are composite classes.

At present our stages classes are – P1, P2/1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 and P7.

Composite Classes

There are times when the distribution of children over the various stages of the school requires the formation of composite classes.  This is where children from two stages of the school come together to form one class. Primary teachers are trained to teach children in differentiated ability groups.  Consequently, composite classes, operate in the same way as single stage classes and allow children to study at their own level.

The following class size guidelines set by the Scottish Government apply:

P1 maximum 25 pupils                                   P2-3 maximum 30 pupils

P4-7 maximum 33 pupils                               Composite classes maximum 25 pupils

We  have a transition programme in place  for all children entering  Primary 1 in August. Our Depute Head Teacher visits as many nurseries as possible to meet and get to know the children. Close liaison between pre-school establishments and St Brendan’s ensures a positive successful transition for the children to primary school.

In May, we will invite you and your child into school for two induction sessions when the children will meet the Primary 1 class teachers and spend time in the Primary 1 classrooms and play stations. Parents and carers will meet with the school staff and other partners and learn more about the arrangements for starting school and how best to support your child get ready for their first year at primary school.

Transfer from Primary School to Secondary School

St Brendan’s have a very effective transition programme with St Thomas Aquinas .   Our P7 teacher  attends monthly meetings with the Learning Community regarding the P7 transition . In addition to the 3 days visits in May , some of our pupils may require additional visits and this is organised through St Thomas Aquinas Stars Programme .

Pupils are normally transferred between the ages of 11 1/2 and 12 1/2 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education.
