Feast of St Bernadette

We were researching about St Bernadette on Monday 16th April because it is the Feast Day of St Bernadette.

We used the iPads to find information on St Bernadette and her story.  She had 17 visions of Mary in Lourdes.  Lourdes is in the South of France.  Miss McCue is visiting Lourdes in July.

We then presented what we learned to the rest of the class.  We have been working hard to improve our presentation skills and are going to become even better presenters by the end of June!!

Famous Glaswegians

As part of our Glasgow topic, we learned about famous Glaswegians.

We worked in groups to read fact files and pick out information about the famous Glaswegian.

  • We learned about Sir Alex Ferguson who is famous for being a successful football manager.
  • Charles Rennie Mackintosh is famous being an architect, designer and artist.
  • Katherine Granger is famous for winning gold and silver medals in rowing at the Olympic Games.
  • Duncan Bannatyne is a famous Glaswegian businessman, author and he was part of the TV show, ‘Dragon’s Den.
  • Andy Murray is a tennis superstar and was born in Glasgow!
  • Sir Mortimer Wheeler was a Glaswegian who was famous for being an archaeologist, and an officer in the British Army.

After we found the information, we summarised it and put it into our own fact files then presented it to the class.  We are working on improving our presenting skills by making sure that we speak clearly and look at our audience instead of looking at our jotter.

Glasgow in the sun.

We are learning about our city, Glasgow, as a mini topic and are working with a P6 class from Sandaig Primary.

We learned the Glasgow rhyme and recreated the Glasgow coat of arms.

There’s the tree that never grew.
There’s the bird that never flew.
There’s the fish that never swam.
There’s the bell that never rang.

The sun was shining so we took our learning outside.

Talk for Writing – what we did during the holidays.

We used the Talk for Writing approach to tell our stories of what we did over the holidays.

First, we planned on our whiteboards and then drew our story map in our jotters.  We then wrote about what we did during the holidays, making sure it matched our picture story.

Soha got an aeroplane to Egypt!

Amina drove up to the north of Scotland and climbed a mountain.

Umar went fishing with his friend.

Fareed’s sister got married and had 12 wedding cars!

WE RAISED £300 FOR MARY’S MEALS

During Lent, we have been trying to raise money for Mary’s  Meals because  we know they help hungry children around the world by giving them a daily meal in their place of education. This work is amazing because it encourages the children to go to school which means they will receive a good education.

We organised a whole school pyjama day and asked for donations.

Everyone came in their jammies – including teachers!

We played cricket in our jammies and even spoke at assembly wearing them too!

We manged to raise £300 which means we can feed 21 children for a year through Mary’s Meals. #almsgiving #helpingothers

Max from Mary’s Meals came to our class to collect the cheque.  Mary’s Meals are now feeding 1,257,278 children across the world!! AMAZING.

Tweetin’ Summaries

We have been reading some short stories as part of our literacy work.

They are moral stories and each have a lesson to be learned in them.

Working with other Primary schools in Glasgow, we are trying to summarise the story in only 280 characters!! That’s not a lot by the way. Each letter, space and piece of punctuation counts as one character. It was so hard at first but we’ve gotten pretty good at it.

We used the ‘Talk for Writing’ method to summarise the story of Pandora’s box through illustrations and actions. This helps us remember the story and have fun at the same time.

CHOOSE KIND ☺️❤️

We created our own astronaut helmets just like Auggie has in the book, Wonder.

We did this to show what it’s like to be so ashamed of your face that you want to cover and hide it every day.

We showed our helmets off at assembly and told the rest of the school about Wonder and why it is so important that we all treat each other kindly.

The main message of the book is CHOOSE KIND.
