BBC Music at the Quay Workshop

16 pupils from S1-S4 attended a full day of workshops at the BBC Studios at Pacific Quay, as part of the BBC Music at the Quay festival.

The day started off with a Radio Production workshop, where our pupils became Presenters, Producers and Engineers. The Presenters got to work writing a script, while the Producers researched the songs and the Engineers learned how to record the presenters, insert stings and idents, and mix the songs using Traktor.

You can listen to each team’s programme, and find out about the live Q&A and MaKey MaKey workshop, after the jump:

Alasdair and Abigail’s Morning Show

Frances and Morgan’s Morning Show

Gregor and Morag’s Great Hits

Rowan and Murray’s Morning Show

Next, the pupils watched a Live Q&A with KT Tunstall, hosted by Vic Galloway. The Q&A was broadcast live online, and clips may be available on the BBC at the Quay Website.

After a quick stop for lunch, pupils had the opportunity to make an instrument using the MaKey MaKey system. First, the staff demonstrated how the system works – using your body’s natural electrical current to complete a circuit, and producing a note. There was a cucumber that played Uptown Funk, and an electric guitar which was apparently “so easy even the teachers could play it” (Mrs Pearce was not impressed…)

Then pupils were split into two groups to come up with their own instruments. Group 1 came up with an interesting “arm” idea which played notes using a coiled lead and an Iron Man-like cardboard arm. Group 2’s invention was based on a clock, which allowed them to remix songs.

The pupils had a great time, and the BBC staff were very complimentary about our young people’s attitude, behaviour, effort and participation. Well done!
