Literacy Policy

Curriculum for Excellence

At Royston Nursery School, we aim to provide all of our children with a variety of rich stimulating learning experiences that promotes literacy development.

Aims

  • To provide literacy opportunities for all children
  • Improve literacy attainment
  • Include bilingual learners and children with additional support needs to develop literacy skills.
  • Promote literacy learning experiences indoors/outdoors
  • Provide opportunities to develop literacy skills in a variety of contexts throughout the nursery.
  • Improve children’s phonological awareness
  • To encourage children to use language and literacy for a variety of purposes.
  • To be a communication and language friendly nursery

Methods

  • Provide visual resources around the nursery to support language and literacy skills
  • Resource areas are clearly labelled with visuals and written language
  • Opportunities for talking and listening are supported every day e.g. circle time
  • Display work, floor books and children’s work are supported by written language
  • Children are encouraged to have fun writing, talking and reading throughout nursery
  • Include a variety of languages in text/print around the nursery
  • Resources will support mark making, emergent writing, letters, symbols and in some cases, words in writing around the nursery.
  • Staff will encourage use of environmental print and text
  • Access EAL services for bi-lingual learners
  • Plan for literacy experiences indoors/outdoors. Plans will be available for all stakeholders to view
  • Literacy opportunities will be resourced in every playroom.  Changes to resources will be facilitated by staff.
  • Staff will ensure a variety of songs, rhyme, books, games, ICT, and other resources are literacy appropriate for ages and stages of development
  • Staff will observe and record assessment information of individual children’s literacy development and progress
  • Accessible free choice of reading and writing resources will be available daily
  • Staff will use phonological awareness resources and programmes to encourage literacy development
