Term 3 – Week 5

In numeracy this week we have been looking at using our knowledge of money to solve problems that we may encounter in our day to day lives. We have been using our problem solving skills to figure out whether we need to add, subtract, multiply or divide to find the answer.

In literacy, we have been continuing to use our Bug Club reading books as the basis for building on and developing our reading comprehension skills. We are continuing to look at different types of questioning in an effort to increase our understanding of text.

Our writing this week has centred upon our re-draft of our adventure story. Previously we had been looking at continuing an existing text, using the characters and setting to predict how the story will finish. We have been working on our after writing strategies to ensure we are producing a piece of work that meets all the success criteria for an interesting piece of writing.

We have also been looking at our eco committee duties this week and reviewing how well we have been working towards our targets. By completing our own review we have been able to self-assess what areas we have been doing well in and also what areas might need to be improved. Overall, it has allowed the pupils to decide what path their future learning will take.

Term 3 – week 4

Primary 5/6 have been continuing to work with money in numeracy this week, focusing on using our learning to problem solve real life situations. We have been working out how much we might need for trips to the cinema, how much change we could expect from the shop and loads more! We hope to keep developing our learning of money and use this in a whole host of different scenarios.

In literacy, we have been continuing to consolidate our strategies for reading and in our writing we have been using our plans to create our first drafts. As we continue we will be looking at strategies to improve our drafts and create the best piece of writing we can.

This week we have been further progressing with our topic, looking at the variety of uses for bridges and the basic structures themselves. Next week we will be looking at how bridges impact communities looking at bridges in our own community and around the world.

Term 3 – Week 3

This week in numeracy primary 5/6 have begun to look  at money and the way in which notes and coins are connected. We have also started adding and taking away sums of money using our knowledge of decimals from last term.

Raghav  – “I liked working on sums using the real money and coins. Daily challenge also!”

In literacy we have been exploring different genres in our writing. This week we have been looking at an adventure story. We have been using fantastic vocabulary and similes to describe our character and setting as we continue writing the story.

We have also been putting the finishing touches on our Dashing White Sergeant dance and song for our Burns assembly. It was a fab afternoon seeing everyone’s hard work coming together.

Aaminah – “We have been learning Scottish country dancing for our Burns assembly. It was hard!”

Laibah – “It was tricky to begin because we were all doing the same steps but we got it in the end.”

Liliana – “When were dancing the ceilidh it was hard because we were going so fast but we all ended up getting there in the end.”

We have also started on our STEM topic of bridges and structures so there will be lots of interesting lessons and learning to see on our blog in the next few weeks and months.

Term 3 – Weeks 1 and 2

It is good to be back after a well deserved holiday and it great to see primary 5/6 so enthusiastic to get learning once more. These first 2 weeks we have been looking at consolidating our learning from last term and getting settled into the new year.

In literacy we have started developing our imaginative writing further and have been focusing on the story of Rab Ha. It has been great to see all pupils using fantastic wow words to describe the characters and creating wonderful similes as well! In numeracy we have been reminding ourselves of fractions and decimals. We are looking at creating links in our mathematical learning which we can use in different areas of maths and in our topic this term.

Primary 5/6 have also hit the ground running with our eco commitments and have started a more conscious effort to reduce food waste in our school. We have continued to monitor the food waste at lunchtime but also begun composting any fruit and vegetables that would be thrown away. We hope to use our compost on our veg patch in spring time.

With our Burns assembly fast approaching, primary 5/6 have been celebrating Scottish culture through looking at Scots language, both in everyday life but also through music and stories. It has been great to see everyone so enthusiastic and trying out their new vocabulary.

Keep up the great work primary5/6 and it is going to be another fantastic year of learning.

European Landmarks

As part of our Europe topic we have been looking at the different landmarks across the continent. We have been looking at the how they can show a nation’s history and culture as well as telling us more about the geography of different countries. For our technology lesson we have been designing and creating our own landmarks by using problem solving and teamwork skills.

Our Eiffel Tower masterpieces required us to design a model using only the materials available and doing so in just 45 minutes. Primary 5/6 were showing off their impressive teamwork and listening abilities to really come up with some fantastic creations.

Finishing touches.

All working hard to make their designs come to life.

Avi’s group explaining the challenges they faced in designing and building their Eiffel Tower.

Halloween Party

Last Wednesday primary 5/6 along with everyone at Anderston Primary enjoyed a spooktacular Halloween party. We had a Halloween parade, games and we even made our own potions! Everybody had a lot of fun and the costumes were incredible.

Aaminah – “We made lots of potions and made a big explosion! It was very hard to clean up.”

Maths Week 2018

Last week for Maths Week Scotland, primary 5/6 were designing, building and presenting their very own maths boards games. Working in teams, we had to come up with a unique board game where the players had to solve maths problems to win. We had some amazing creations and some fantastic ideas. Not only did p5/6 have to use their maths skills, they had to use their problem solving skills to meet the design brief.  It was great to see the teamwork on display as the different groups shared their ideas and created their masterpieces.
