P2/1 weekly update

In Literacy, learners have been developing their sentence writing skills, with a particular focus on enhancing their work through the use of effective and varied sentence openers. Pupils have been encouraged to think carefully about how they begin their sentences in order to make their writing more interesting and engaging for the reader, and they are beginning to apply these skills with increasing confidence and independence.

In Numeracy, the class has been using Dienes materials to support their understanding of teen numbers. Through practical, hands-on activities, pupils have been exploring the concept of tens and ones and are becoming more confident in representing and identifying these numbers accurately. It has been very encouraging to see the progress being made as learners develop a deeper understanding of number structure.

In the playroom, pupils have been exploring the theme of Spring through a wide range of creative and interactive learning experiences. Activities have included still life drawing inspired by seasonal changes, Easter egg word hunts to reinforce literacy skills, and the creation of imaginative “wanted” posters for a mischievous bunny who has stolen the school eggs. These experiences have supported both creativity and collaboration among the children.

Primary Two pupils have also successfully completed their final week of Bikeability. Throughout the programme, they have demonstrated enthusiasm and determination while developing important cycling skills. They are now looking forward to welcoming parents next week, where they will have the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their newly acquired skills with confidence.

P2/1 weekly update

This week in Literacy, we developed our writing by describing Spring. We created our own word mats to help us write sentences about Spring and discussed the changes we notice during this season. We used our five senses to help us describe what we might see, hear, smell, feel and even taste in Spring. The children are growing in confidence when using adjectives to make their writing more interesting and are working hard to remember their core targets.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on place value. We used concrete materials and Glasgow Count strategies to help us understand how numbers are made and how the value of digits changes depending on their place.

We have also had a key focus on learning about our rights as we work towards achieving our Gold Award this year. The children enjoyed the story Elmer and discussed how our class and school values link closely with our rights. It was lovely to see the thoughtful connections the children made during our discussions.

🩺 P2/1 Explore the NHS and Celebrate World Book Day!

P2/1 at Wallacewell Primary School have had another busy and exciting week of learning!

As part of our class learning about the NHS, the children have been exploring the important role of a pharmacy. They really enjoyed a hands-on activity where they mixed their own “medicines” and practised making prescriptions. It was fantastic to see everyone so engaged in their learning.

In literacy, we had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day. The children made a fantastic effort dressing up as their favourite book characters and it was lovely to see so many different stories represented. We also created book reviews about our favourite books and shared them with our classmates.

In numeracy, we have been exploring weighing. The children used everyday objects to investigate and compare different weights through practical activities, helping them to develop their understanding in a fun and engaging way.

Well done to P2/1 for another fantastic week of learning.

P2/1 Weekly Blog

We have been learning all about the National Health Service (NHS) and why it is so important. We talked about the different people who work for the NHS and how they help us.

Through role play, we explored what a health centre is like. We became doctors, nurses and dentists and practised how to help patients, especially in an emergency. We learned how important it is to listen carefully, be kind and act quickly to help people feel better.

We are enjoying learning about our bodies and how to keep them healthy and safe.

In Maths, we were learning about weighing. We used scales to weigh different objects and learned how to tell if something is heavy or light. We enjoyed comparing items and predicting which would be heavier before checking on the scales. This helped us develop our measuring skills and use mathematical language confidently.

In Literacy, we continued to describe different settings and linked this to our IDL topic. We described what a doctor’s surgery is like and explained why we might go there. We thought carefully about what we might see, hear and feel in a health centre. Some of us described the waiting room, the reception desk and the treatment rooms. We are becoming more confident at adding detail to make our writing interesting.

What a fantastic week of learning in P2/1! We are so proud of how everyone is working hard, using their imagination and building important skills every day. 🌈✨

Celebrating our Differences!

Today in class, we celebrated diversity and took part in activities that helped us recognise that we are all unique and different. We talked about how everyone has their own strengths, talents, backgrounds, and ideas that make them special.

We enjoyed fun activities where we shared things about ourselves, learned about each other’s cultures and traditions, and discovered how our differences make our class stronger. It was a great reminder that even though we are not all the same, we all belong and should respect and appreciate one another.

It was a wonderful day filled with learning, kindness, and celebration!

P2/1 weekly update

This week in P2/1, the children have continued to develop their learning about dinosaurs. They enjoyed exploring dinosaur habitats and learning about which dinosaurs lived on land and which lived in the sea.

We were also very fortunate to welcome Zoolab into school. During this exciting visit, the children learned about a variety of animals, exploring their features and habitats. Many pupils showed great courage by holding the animals and asking questions. This experience provided a fantastic stimulus for writing, where the children recounted the visit and described the animals they had seen and held.

In maths, the focus was on measure. The children are becoming increasingly confident using concrete materials to measure accurately. They worked very well in pairs to count and measure a range of objects and even measured each other, demonstrating excellent teamwork.

It has been a very positive and successful week of learning in P2/1.

A Roarsome Week of Learning in Primary 2/1 🦖

Primary 2/1 have had a very busy and exciting week, diving into their new topic all about dinosaurs!

As part of our topic work, the children explored different types of dinosaurs and learned how to categorise them as carnivores or herbivores. They engaged in thoughtful discussions about what dinosaurs may have looked like, considering their size, colour, and physical features. The children also learned about camouflage and why it would have been important for dinosaurs to blend into their environments.

In maths, the children developed their data-handling skills by learning how to use tally marks to record information. They then used this data to create a pictogram showing the class’s favourite fruits. The children demonstrated excellent counting skills and took great care in presenting their results clearly.

During literacy, we continued our work on describing settings. The children wrote imaginative descriptions of where dinosaurs lived, including forests, jungles, and prehistoric landscapes. They also practised improving their writing by adding adjectives to uplevel simple sentences, making their work more detailed and engaging.

To finish the week, the children used a variety of construction materials to design and build their own dinosaurs. We were very impressed with their creativity and teamwork. Some children even created dinosaur enclosures inspired by Jurassic Park, thoughtfully discussing the safety features needed to keep the dinosaurs securely inside.

Well done to Primary 2/1 for a fantastic week of learning. We are very proud of all their hard work and enthusiasm!

P2/1 Weekly update

What a fantastic week of learning for P2/1!

This week, we enjoyed learning more about money in maths. We practised using coins in real life situations through role play in our class shop and are now confident at recognising coins and matching them to their value.

In literacy, we are working on building sentences using our core targets, such as capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We also enjoyed learning about Scots language through poetry, including A Dug, A Dug by Billy Keyes and The Gruffalo’s Wain.

We loved welcoming our parents into the classroom, where we showed them how we use our magnetic boards to build confidence with blending words. We hope you all enjoyed our open afternoon and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

We finished our Scotland topic by learning about the island where Katie Morag lives and comparing it to our city of Glasgow.

What a fantastic start to Term 3 for P2/1!

This week, our focus for learning in the playroom has been on Scotland. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about Glasgow landmarks, such as the Squinty Bridge, Glasgow Cathedral and many more. Through role play we enjoyed taking a tour of Glasgow on our very own City sightseeing bus.
Using our construction resources, we worked together as a team to build these landmarks and what a fantastic job we did! We challenged ourselves by identifying problems and working together to fix them.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about money. We practised using money in real life situations, such as shopping, through role play. We are growing in confidence when identifying coins.

In literacy, we are working hard to learn all of our tricky words. Thank you for your continued support with this at home. Please ensure these are practised daily, as this really helps to improve reading and writing skills.

We also loved learning about Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. The children particularly enjoyed learning about Edinburgh Castle. We even worked as a team to build our own castle and then wrote about it using adjectives.

Well done, P2/1 – a brilliant week of learning!
