The vision for both the pilot and this year’s expanded event was driven by Richard Morgan, Active Schools Coordinator, whose leadership, and commitment were central to bringing the competition to life and scaling it city-wide.

On 19th November 2025, we delivered a city-wide event for S4–S6 pupils, marking our second schools competition. This became the largest secondary school functional fitness event to date, with 280 pupils taking part.

We were fortunate to have support from a wide range of partners, including:

Nathaniel Collins, WBC Silver Featherweight Champion – meeting pupils and delivering boxing sessions

Graham Halliday, Elite 15 Hyrox athlete

Scott Brown, SBF world record holder for the double West Highland Way and ultra-runner

Ceejay Cooks Preps

Team Nightmare

Caz Nicoll Fitness

Train With Anna

Fly Gym Glasgow

Factory Weights

Gauntlet Fitness Race

Dexter McKeating

Soul Suites Glasgow Recovery Zone

In preparation for the event, we coordinated an 8–10-week training block following the summer break. Local gyms across the city were contacted, many of which were keen to collaborate with schools. Some provided staff to deliver sessions in school, while others offered space within their own facilities. These partnerships were organised on a school-by-school basis, supported by a number of teachers some were already involved in functional fitness and Hyrox.

We also delivered a CPD session for teaching staff focused on functional fitness and Hyrox-style delivery. This included training on how to implement a mini-games format both in PE lessons and within extra-curricular clubs.

Below is the competition workout for this years event.

Active Schools Nightmare Games 2.0 – Instructional Video

Click below to see our footage from previous years:

Active Schools Nightmare Games 2025 Click here to watch the highlights of this years event: Active Schools Nightmare Games 2.0 – Event Highlights Building on the success of our first schools Hyrox/functional fitness competition (Nightmare Games 1.0) in November 2024 run as a pilot with mainly north-east secondary schools, where pairs of boys and girls competed in a fitness workout against other schools we expanded our efforts this year.
