Animal Behaviour

In recent decades, the study of animal behaviour (Ethology) has become an important part of biology.

Research in animal behaviour has helped improve our understanding of child development and human communication, as well as our understanding of how communities are organised. It has also helped us understand speciation and natural selection.

Behaviour is the way in which an animal responds to a stimulus in its environment. Behaviour can be innate (inherited and instinctive) or learned through experience.

An ethogram is a list of all the different observed behaviours shown by an animal. You can find a template of an ethogram HERE.

Why not create your own ethogram and study the behaviour of an animal at home?

You could observe a pet, a family member or even a panda!

Possible Research Tasks

Discover how police dogs and guide dogs are trained by using both their innate and learned behaviours to train them to do certain jobs.
