Homework Policy
Purpose and Philosophy
At Notre Dame Primary School, we believe that homework plays an important role in reinforcing learning, developing independent study skills, and fostering a partnership between school and home. Homework provides opportunities for students to consolidate and extend their learning beyond the classroom, promoting academic growth and personal responsibility. Homework will be revision and over learning of work, not new learning, therefore there is no pressure to complete. We understand that family life can be hectic at times and the opportunity to spend time as a family doing an activity can be very rewarding and a learning experience too.
Frequency and Duration
Homework will be assigned regularly to students from Friday to Thursday. The amount of time students are expected to spend on homework will vary by CFE level, with younger students typically assigned shorter tasks and older students gradually increasing in duration. As a general guideline, students should spend approximately 20-30 minutes on homework, per night however there is flexibility across the week to manage busy family life.
Types of Homework
Homework assignments may include but are not limited to:
- Reading
- Numeracy
- Spelling or vocabulary activities
- Topic related projects or investigations
Homework for Literacy and Numeracy will be posted weekly on a Thursday for reference only and the task will be completed in your child’s homework jotter. A third task may be or may not be completed on a device – such as Sumdog – at the Teacher’s discretion.
Guidelines for Parents
Parents are encouraged to support their children with homework by:
- Providing a quiet and conducive study environment
- Establishing a regular homework routine
- Offering encouragement and praise
- Assisting with understanding tasks if needed, but allowing students to work independently when appropriate
- Communicating with teachers if there are any concerns or questions about homework assignments
All previous week’s homework will be archived, and any progression can be seen from your child’s jotter and completed work.
