Notre Dame Careers Conference, 15th February 2018
All S4 and S5 pupils, parents and carers are invited along to our Careers Conference on Thursday 15th February, 6.00pm-7.30pm in the school. There will be a short presentation in the assembly hall from Skills Development Scotland, followed by a chance to discuss a variety of career pathways with representatives from a wide range of colleges, universities, employers and training providers.
Respect Me – Anti-Bullying Week November 2017
Respect is at the heart of all healthy relationships. Our S1 pupils have joined us from over 50 Glasgow Primary Schools and beyond. We value all our young people and want them to feel part of our community. Making new friends and maintaining existing friendships is a huge part of school life. We have a programme of support to help young people to develop key social skills that will enable them to enjoy healthy and long lasting friendships. Over the last month, our S1 pupils have benefited from a number of Health and Wellbeing sessions highlighting the difference between positive and negative behaviour within relationships and strategies on how to cope with bullying behaviour. Takeaway Theatre Company and Police Scotland delivered interactive workshops and presentations which also included valuable online safety and cyberbullying education. Mrs Henderson, DHT Pupil Support introduced Anti-bullying Week to S1 and S2 with assembly workshops called ‘Respect Means’, pupils had their photos taken as part of a national conversation about what respect means to young people. Our Pastoral Care Team will deliver follow up PSSE lessons called ‘Responding to Bullying’ and feedback from pupils will be analysed and shared with staff, parents and pupils. DYW Leadership Training with Glasgow Airport
On Wednesday, the 4th of October, the office bearers and I had the privilege of working with Craig and Beth from the HR Department at Glasgow Airport for a leadership training session involving psychometric testing. Before the session we were given a survey to complete, which asked us to choose words and phrases that were most and least like ourselves. Based on our responses to the survey we were given feedback that was presented in a personal profile, outlining the characteristics, values and strengths of each person. The information was also conveyed through three graphs which identified areas of strength and development of each person. We found that all of us had thorough, perfectionist characteristics, where we would be more likely to take lots of time to research things before making any decisions. Morgan Stanley Work Insight Tour
Recently senior phase students studying Business Technology visited Morgan Stanley for a work insight tour. It was a very interesting and worthwhile trip which we all enjoyed. We were given a brief presentation about the company and the different committees within the company. We were then told about the different things they do out with the company, for example charity work and fundraising or visiting schools, donating kindles for pupils to support their learning. They then talked to us about the different ways people have joined Morgan Stanley, for example some people have taken internships or apprenticeships before working full time with the company. We also had female employees from different departments of the company come and tell us how they joined Morgan Stanley and their experience within the company. It was inspiring to see so many women working in a career that has previously been considered a male dominated field. The majority had no intention of going into that field but when they joined Morgan Stanley they found a job they enjoyed. They also talked about how Morgan Stanley has offices all around the world and that some departments have the opportunity to visit, for example the New York office or Mumbai office. They then gave us a tour of the building, and to be honest that was probably one of the reasons why the people like their job as they had a gym and a very fancy canteen. But what I took from this experience is the idea that the majority of the people we talked said they were in the exact position a lot of the 5th and 6th years are in now; the fact that we are beginning to identify the route we would like to take when we leave school. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and look forward to many more.

As part of #mathsweekscot our S5/6 Financial Education Class will be participating in a presentation and workshop from AXA Business Insurance. Pupils will be making links with what they are learning in class to the workplace.

Saint Hairdressing are offering a three day work experience placement to interested S4 pupils. Pupils will have the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of working in a hairdressers including; front of house, media and advertising, customer relations, hairdressing skills and working as part of a team. Any pupil who is interested should see their Pastoral Care teacher or Mrs Marshall

Scottish Enterprise worked with EAL pupils last session on developing their employability and interview skills. Pupils worked with employees of Scottish Enterprise and interpreters to learn about recruitment process, prepare an application and apply for a job. Pupils then took part in tasks that allowed them to apply for their chosen job before participating in a series of mock interviews, receiving immediate feedback.

The Bank of Scotland delivered a Financial Literacy Programme to S2, S4 and S5 students. They worked with students to teach them the importance and relevance of money in everyday situations. Helping pupils prepare for the future and learn about budgets.

Ten pupils with an interest in pursuing a career in Law attended a Career Insight Day at CMS Law Firm. When we arrived we were joined by two other schools and put into groups. Strathclyde University, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow Airport, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Analog Devices and BAE Systems delivered workshops to S2 pupils to develop their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Pupils also learned about possible career opportunities involving STEM.

Apple hosted a bespoke CPD session for staff. Staff informed Apple of what they would like to learn prior to their visit. Apple answered all of our questions and introduced staff to new ways that technology can support learning and teaching in the classroom.

How to Land Your Dream Job
Our S6 pupils will be participating in an interview workshop with representatives from Glasgow Airport. Pupils learn how to prepare for interview before undertaking interviews with employees from a variety of sectors within Glasgow Airport. This is ideal training as pupils prepare for interviews at university, college, apprentices or in relation to employment.
Office Bearers Leadership Training
Our S6 Office Bearers will undertake leadership training with senior managers of Glasgow Airport. The training will enable them to learn and discuss potential scenarios that they will encounter this academic year in their role as Office Bearers.
Work Inspiration Day
S3 pupils are invited to attend Glasgow Airport to experience and learn about the different roles and career opportunities Glasgow Airport has to offer. Anyone who is interested please see your Pastoral Care teacher or Mrs Marshall.

Creative Industries pupils present their business plan to Apple!
‘As part of our project for Creative Industries class we have been developing our own brand of make-up called ‘Rouge’. We have created our own logo and branding whilst carrying out market research to ensure that we created a product that people wanted. As a result we created the Rouge Lipstick. As part of our presentation Nagoul, Treasure and I visited Apple Buchanan Street. We were given a task by the Business Team to present our ideas in the boardroom ‘Dragon’s Den Style’. An Apple trainer helped us with the software and we were given one hour to create a presentation.
Once we had created our presentation we were sent to the boardroom to deliver it in front of Head of Marketing for Apple in Scotland, Head of Business for Apple in Scotland and the Store Manager. Our presentation was a success and after some tough questioning, all three Apple representatives said they would invest in us.
Overall this was a worthwhile and enjoyable experience. It was an opportunity that we could not refuse. How many pupils can say they have presented a business plan in front of a billion dollar company!? Being in the Apple Store was very exciting for us and we really enjoyed our time.’

Our Business Breakfast
We are committed to working with a range of local and national partners to provide young people with experience of life in the work place. In November, we welcomed guests from a number of partner businesses, including Glasgow Airport.
