‘Our Glasgow’

This year’s S1 course has been a specially designed course which will integrate most social subjects together. We are studying the history of Glasgow, the political make-up of Glasgow and the geographical layout. The aim of the course is to complete small units within ‘Our Glasgow’ to broaden young people’s minds and understanding of their local surroundings. For example; Suburb and City Centre, Migration & Discrimination and Slave Trade to Fair Trade.

All S1 will complete the John Muir Award which is very widely credited and involves hands-on experience and field study.

RE

In S1 pupils will develop understanding of how Christian Saints have contributed to the development of Scotland. Pupils will be able to research, analyse and describe why someone is called a ‘saint’, and will explore and establish values such as honesty, respect and compassion. Pupils will engage in reflecting on their own values, as well as those of others, when making moral decisions. The use of a variety of approaches, including class discussion and debate, will allow pupils to demonstrate ways to make a positive difference in the world.

History

WW1

In S2 pupils will disperse to subject specific topics. In History, the pupils will be learning about World War One; the causes, the experience of the men on the Western Front as well as what it was like for those left behind on ‘The Home Front’ during these years.

Suffrage

Complimentary to this, S2 pupils will then study a short topic looking at the suffrage cause. Focussing mainly on the female struggle the course allows a chronological approach to the expanding rights and responsibilities of women during the 19th and 20th century.

Civil Rights Movement

Finally, S2 pupils will finish their session by studying part of the civil rights movement. Again, focussing on the imperative action that is voting, this course allows us to study a different country’s approach to voting and how inhumanely discrimination can affect people’s lives.

Modern Studies

North & South Divide

This course looks at the deprivation and impoverished countries south of the equator. Firstly by describing the histories of war and terrorism and followed by a specific case study and why the country has become so divided from others.

Taking Part

This unit focusses on the Scottish and British government. It describes different options as to how people can participate in government but vitally, also explains how imperative taking part in government is. This course finishes by organising a mock-election with the class – always good fun!

Terrorism

An ever changing unit, for an ever changing world. Pupils aim to understand and describe what terrorism is, identify particular attacks both within the UK and in the rest of the world. The unit highlights different groups, methods, and aims which exist across the globe and culminates in a research task which allows pupils to develop their ICT and analysis skills of media portrayal.

RE

In the Beginning Unit

In S2 pupils will begin with a focus on the development of literacy skills and will look for meaning and truths in familiar stories like Little Red Riding Hood and Harry Potter. Pupils will also look for meaning and truths in stories of their choice.

Pupils will then read in detail the Genesis creation story and will be able to identify and explain Christian views about the creation of the universe. Through creative tasks given pupils will next move on to examining a key scientific view. The ‘Big Bang Theory’ will be researched in detail. Pupils will engage in the  analysis of a variety of creation stories from around the world exploring different points of views and will work towards reaching their own conclusion on how the world began.

God and the Natural World Unit

This unit will examine the  issue of ‘stewardship’. Pupils will research religious and non-religious views highlighting the need to look after the world’s resources.

Geography

In S2 pupils will study a range of Geographical topics and learn some key skills that will help you progress with your learning now and in the future. There is a huge range of choice on offer within the course for individuals and the class so that you can personalise your own Geography course! Geography is the study of the planet Earth and how we all live on it, looking at how we can improve life for all and live sustainably without damaging the environment or the chances for us all in the future: we study the Physical Environment (the natural foundations of the planet); the Human Environment (how we live on it) and Global Issues (looking at living major problems and how we can solve them.)
