{"id":24,"date":"2017-11-28T12:26:50","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T12:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/kpssbuscomp\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2022-02-06T11:43:59","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T11:43:59","slug":"subject-1-senior-phase","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/kpsshealthandwellbeing\/subject-1\/subject-1-senior-phase\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior Phase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Senior Phase we offer an excellent number of learner pathways.\u00a0 These include Nationals 3 &#8211; 5, Higher PE,\u00a0 Higher Refereeing, NPA, National 5 and Higher Dance, Wellbeing Award, Community Sports Leadership Levels 4 &#8211; 6 and Core PE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In National 3, 4 and 5 pupils&#8217; will participate in three practical activities.\u00a0 All pupils participate in Volleyball and Basketball.\u00a0 We then offer an element of personalisation and choice as each individual pupil can opt to do either Football or Badminton.<\/p>\n<p>The SQA examination requires pupils to complete a written or typed Portfolio.\u00a0 This is worth 50% of a pupils overall grade and is marked out of 60.<\/p>\n<p>The other 50% of the grade is made up of practical performance marks.\u00a0 Pupils will add their scores together for 2 competitive performances that they must complete.\u00a0 Pupils get to choose what 2 activities they get graded in. \u00a0Each activity is scored out of 30 marks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Higher PE pupils will also participate in three practical activities. All pupils participate in Volleyball and Basketball. We then offer an element of personalisation and choice as each individual pupil can opt to do either Football or Badminton.<\/p>\n<p>The SQA examination requires pupils to complete a 2.5 hour examination worth 50% of the overall grade. \u00a0There is three sections. \u00a0Section 1 &#8211; 32 marks. \u00a0Section 2 &#8211; 6 to 10 marks. \u00a0Section 3 &#8211; 8 to 12 marks.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0other 50% of the grade is made up of practical performance marks. Pupils will add their scores together for 2 competitive performances that they must complete. \u00a0Each performance is marked out of 30. \u00a0Pupils get to choose what 2 activities they get graded in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practical Performance Units<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of our Master Class Programme pupils can opt to complete practical performance units.\u00a0 This means that pupils will not have to set any exams or complete a portfolio.\u00a0 Instead, if they manage to pass two practical activities of their choosing then they will achieve a unit pass certificate from SQA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Sports Leadership Levels 4, 5 and 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Community Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that has an outstanding record of developing leadership skills in our young people.\u00a0 The qualification consists of a number of units that pupils work through to gain experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wellbeing Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In S4 we offer our young people the opportunity to complete the Wellbeing Award.\u00a0 This award is involves both theoretical and practical elements.\u00a0 The purpose of the award is to help young people identify aspects of their wellbeing they are keen to improve and then take practical steps to achieve this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refereeing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Refereeing Award allows young people to become fully qualified Referees and offers a clear pathway into the profession.\u00a0 Young people can referee football matches\u00a0 immediately after achieving their qualification and earn a minimum of \u00a340 per match.\u00a0 The course has an electronic exam on the laws of the game, a physical fitness test,\u00a0 match report unit and practical exam involving refereeing a match.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We offer Dance at NPA, National 5 and Higher Levels.\u00a0 At National 5 Level we have 3 components to the course.\u00a0 Component 1 is a three section 1 hour written exam worth 30 marks which is 20% of the overall grade.\u00a0 Component 2 is a practical activity in which young people must create a 1:30 to 2 minute duet for their peers to perform.\u00a0 This is worth 35 marks.\u00a0 They must also conduct a choreographic review which is worth 30 marks.\u00a0 Component 3 is a practical performance assessment of a dance choreographed by the class teacher.\u00a0 This is worth 35 marks and must be performed solo.<\/p>\n<p>At Higher Level we also have 3 components.\u00a0 Component 1 is a 2 hour written exam worth 40 marks which is 30% of the overall grade.\u00a0 \u00a0Component 2 is a practical activity in which young people must create a 2 to 3 minute routine for a minimum of 3 dancers.\u00a0 This is worth 45 marks.\u00a0 They must also conduct a choreographic review which is worth 25 marks.\u00a0 Component 3 is a practical performance assessment of 2 dances choreographed by the class teacher.\u00a0 These are worth 35 marks each and must be performed solo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Core PE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Government recommends that pupils receive a minimum of two periods of quality Physical Education per week.\u00a0 At King&#8217;s Park Secondary all senior pupils receive this allocation in the form of a double period.\u00a0 Through pupil consultation we have developed a unique way of delivering our Senior Phase Core PE programme.\u00a0 Pupils opt in to a class which suits their individual needs.\u00a0 Each class then rotates round three of our working areas.\u00a0 Classes spend 30 minutes in each working area before moving on to the next one.\u00a0 The activities we offer in each area and the way in which they are delivered changes depending on the unique group of learners we have in front of us.<\/p>\n<p>To help develop lifelong physical activity habits we also try to engage our senior pupils in physical activities out in our local community.\u00a0 We often book facilities at Castlemilk Sports Centre, Gorbals Leisure Centre, Toryglen Football Centre and Queens Park to give our pupils additional experiences out with school.\u00a0 We also visit local parks to go for walks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Senior Phase we offer an excellent number of learner pathways.\u00a0 These include Nationals 3 &#8211; 5, Higher PE,\u00a0 Higher Refereeing, NPA, National 5 and Higher Dance, Wellbeing Award, Community Sports Leadership Levels 4 &#8211; 6 and Core PE.
