Mathematics has been one of the decisive factors in shaping the modern world and continues to grow and find new uses in science, technology, business and social life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Mathematics courses will help develop the Numeracy and analytical skills required for the world of work, recreation and further study of STEM subjects. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The following courses are available to S4 pupils<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 3 Applications of Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Entry Requirements<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u2013 completion of BGE Second Level Mathematics and Numeracy <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course consists of the following internally assessed units: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">* Manage Money and Data<\/span><\/span>\u200b<span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> * Shape, Space and Measures \u00a0 * Numeracy<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">For pupils who make sufficient progress, there may also be the opportunity to achieve the National 4 Numeracy award. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 4 Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Entry Requirements<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u2013 completion of BGE Third Level Mathematics and Numeracy <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">* National 4 Added Value <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The Added Value assessment is timed and consists of two parts: Non-Calculator Question Paper (20 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">mins<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">) and Calculator Question Paper (40 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">mins<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">For pupils who make sufficient progress, there may also be the opportunity to achieve the National 5 Numeracy award. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 5 Mathematics<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> and National 5 Numeracy Award<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Entry Requirements<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u2013 for S4 pupils: completion of BGE Fourth Level Mathematics <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">or<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> for S5\/6 pupils: completion of National 4 Mathematics and National 5 Numeracy Award. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course consists of the following units: \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">* Expressions and Formulae \u00a0 * Relationships \u00a0 \u00a0* Applications<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course is assessed e<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">xte<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">rnally t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">hrough timed Non \u2013 Calculator (50 marks) and Calculator Question Papers (60 marks).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 5 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Applications of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">For pupils who make sufficient progress with National 5 Mathematics, there may also be the opportunity to achieve the additional qualification of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 5 Applications of Mathematics.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> This is assessed externally by the SQA through <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">timed Non \u2013 Calculator Question (45 marks) and Calculator Question Papers (65 marks).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The following courses are available to S5\/6 pupils<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-align: right;font-size: 1rem\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Higher Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Entry Requirements<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u2013 Pass <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">at National 5 Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The Higher Mathematics course provides an in-depth study of mathematical concepts and the ways in which mathematics describes our world<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">. This is a challenging course and to be successful pupils must have a sound knowledge of the following N5 skills: factorising, indices, fractions, quadratics, trigonometric equations and graphs. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course consists of three units: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">* Expressions and Functions \u00a0 * Relationships &amp; Calculus \u00a0 * Applications<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course is assessed externally <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">by the SQA <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">hrough timed Non \u2013 Calculator (60 marks) and Calculator Question Papers (70 marks). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s35\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Advanced Higher Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Entry Requirements <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">&#8211; Pass at Higher Mathematics<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course provides the foundation for many developments in the sciences and in technology as well as having its own intrinsic value<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">. This is a challenging course and to be successful pupils must have a sound knowledge of the following skills from Higher Mathematics: differentiation, integration, curve sketching, trigonometric identities and equations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The Advanced Higher course consists of the following units:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s64\"><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">*Methods in Algebra &amp; Calculus<\/span><\/span> \u200b\u200b\u200b<span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">*Applications of Algebra &amp; Calculus \u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u200b<span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s24\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">*Geometry, Proof &amp; Systems of Equations<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s98\"><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The course is assessed externally <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s25\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">by the SQA through a timed Question Paper (100 marks)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mathematics plays an important role in our lives. \u00a0It is used in everyday activities such as budgeting, keeping time and playing games.
