The National 5<\/span>\/Higher<\/span>\u00a0Sociology course helps learners to develop an understanding of society that goes beyond personal experience and common-sense explanations. They learn to think about human society, social issues, culture and identity from different points of view. They also learn about the key role of evidence in supporting explanations for human social behaviour and become familiar with research methods in\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>ociology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why study Sociology?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sociology helps us look more objectively at our society and other societies. It directs attention to how the parts of society fit together and change, as well as makes us aware of the consequences of social change. We are faced with an ever increasingly complex and rapidly changing social world. Studying Sociology provides the tools and methods for understanding the social world around us from a variety of perspectives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

National 5<\/span><\/b>\/Higher<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Content that is covered on the National 5<\/span>\u00a0and Higher<\/span>\u00a0course is<\/span>\u00a0the same and as\u00a0<\/span>follows<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Human society\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates develop an understanding of the sociological approach to studying human societies. They investigate the research methods used in sociology and describe relationships that exist among individuals, groups and institutions from different sociological perspectives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Topics include \u2013 Functionalism, Marxism and Feminism.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Culture and identity\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates develop a basic knowledge and understanding of how to use sociological concepts to explain culture and identity. They investigate and explain the relationship between culture and identity and develop skills in collecting, using and communicating information from a range of sources. They also develop an awareness of diversity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Topics include \u2013 Socialisation, Cultures and Sub-Cultures and Diversity.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Social issues<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Candidates develop a sociological understanding of contemporary social issues. They develop knowledge of sociological theories and the terminology used to explain social issues. They also develop skills in using a range of sources, including research evidence, to justify points of view.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Topics include \u2013 Crime &\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Deviance and Education.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assessment<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The National 5 exam consists of a\u00a0<\/span><\/b>2 hour<\/span><\/b>\u00a0written exam worth 70% of the overall grade and an Assignment which makes up 30% of the overall grade.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Higher exam consists of a 2 hour and\u00a0<\/span><\/b>40 minute<\/span><\/b>\u00a0written exam worth 80 marks and an Assignment which is worth 30 marks.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
