{"id":278,"date":"2020-01-12T23:10:27","date_gmt":"2020-01-12T23:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/kpsscurricularpathways\/?page_id=278"},"modified":"2020-01-12T23:10:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-12T23:10:27","slug":"pathways-to-the-senior-phase-practical-electronics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/kpsscurricularpathways\/curricular-areas\/sciences\/pathways-to-the-senior-phase-practical-electronics\/","title":{"rendered":"Pathways to the Senior Phase: Practical Electronics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Practical Electronics is a practical course that allows students to develop a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">knowledge and understanding of key concepts in electronics and apply these in a range of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">practical ways.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><strong><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 4\/5<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">The National 4 &amp; 5 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Practical Electronics <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">courses enable learners <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">to develop:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">a range of practical skills in electronics, including skills in analysis and problem-solving, design skills, skills in the safe use of tools and equipment, and skills in evaluating products and systems<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"s5\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">awareness of the importance of safe working practices in electronics<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">an understanding of the role and impact of electronics in changing and influencing society and the environment<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">National 4 &amp; 5 courses have three units that pupils must pass to gain an overall award:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s16\"><span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">* <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Circuit design<\/span><\/span> \u200b<span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 * <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Circuit construction<\/span><\/span>\u200b<span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 * <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s8\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Circuit simulation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><strong><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Assessment <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">At National 4 pupils will have to pass each individual unit and complete an Added Value Unit which will be graded as a pass or fail. This will involve the pupils having to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">complete practical activities related to the course.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">At National 5 the Course assessment will consist of two components: a question paper (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">60<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> marks) <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">practical activities <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">(<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">7<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">0 marks)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> which are carried out throughout the year<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">. The overall grade will be calculated by weighting the exam (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">30<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">%) and the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">practical activities<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\"> (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">7<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">0%) together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><strong><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Progression<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s17\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont20\">Successful completion of the course could lead on to studying Physics at National 5.
