Why study Spanish?<\/span><\/span> In the modern world, languages and communication skills have become increasingly important in the workplace, where global trade, business, travel and ICT are part of everyday life. <\/span><\/span>Spanish<\/span><\/span> speakers form <\/span><\/span>7% of the world\u2019s <\/span><\/span>population. Spanish is the official language of <\/span><\/span>21 countries <\/span><\/span>and is spoken by <\/span><\/span>over 8% of the US population <\/span><\/span>(30 million people). Spain plays an important role as one of Britain\u2019s most important trading partners. <\/span><\/span>The purpose of all courses is to develop the skills of listening, talking, reading, writing, <\/span><\/span>to understand and use Spanish to communicate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

National 3\/4<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Two units: Using Language and Understanding Language \u2013 units are internally assessed. To achieve <\/span><\/span>National 4<\/span><\/span>, pupils must complete an Added Value Unit, in order to complete the course.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

National 5<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Two units: Using Language and Understanding Language \u2013 units are internally assessed. In addition, there is a dual purpose Added Value assessment \u2013 talking, worth 30%. Pupils sit external exams in reading, listening and writing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Modern Languages for Life and Work Award – <\/span><\/span>Spanish<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This course has <\/span><\/span>3<\/span><\/span> units \u2013 Modern Languages for Work Purposes; Modern Languages for Life; Building Own Employability Skills. \u00a0Units are internally assessed. It could be considered as an alternative to National 3 or National 4.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CFE Higher Spanish<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Entry Requirements<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u2022 <\/span>Pass<\/span><\/span> National 5 level<\/span><\/span> \u2013 consideration given to other results on an individual basis.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

This course comprises two units<\/span><\/span> –<\/span><\/span> Understanding Language & Using Language. The units <\/span><\/span>build on <\/span><\/span>the contexts<\/span><\/span> covered in the National 5 <\/span><\/span>C<\/span><\/span>ourse<\/span><\/span>: Society, Learning, Employability and Culture. <\/span><\/span>To gain a course award, pupils must pass <\/span><\/span>both<\/span><\/span> units as well as their external <\/span><\/span>course assessments<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Advanced Higher Spanish<\/span><\/span> \u2013 This course may be available to students who have passed Higher Spanish and can successfully demonstrate the ability to work independently. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Progression<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A study of job adverts will show an increasing requirement for competence in foreign languages. Colleges and Universities offer courses, including the Sciences and Engineering, Law and Accountancy, which now include a European language option and the chance to study abroad for a year.
