The Politics <\/span><\/span>course enables learners to develop analytical, reasoned and critical argument which is crucial not only in this subject but in personal and vocational contexts. While Politics is in a sense everywhere and significant in everyone\u2019s lives there is no single focus, no entire approach that can provide all the answers to political questions. <\/span><\/span>Higher Politics helps enlighten pupils in regards to who makes the big decisions that affect their lives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Pupils will be involved in cooperative, active learning where they will develop their analytical skills. <\/span><\/span>The investigative and critical thinking activities in this course give learners important experience in contributing to group work and also working on their own. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Particular knowledge, understanding and skills will be developed: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>political concepts, models and theories and the ability to relate these to past and current structures, institutions and practice<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>the work of major political theorists<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>how people participate in the political process and elections in different contemporary contexts<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>skills needed to interpret, analyse and evaluate political sources and election data<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>the<\/span><\/span> ability to construct arguments and explanations which lead to in<\/span><\/span>formed and reasoned conclusions.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Higher<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Higher course has three broad curricular areas which are <\/span><\/span>Political Theory<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> Political Structures and Political Parties and Elections.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Entry Requirements<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This course is suited to pupils who have passe<\/span><\/span>d a <\/span><\/span>Higher<\/span><\/span> social subject in S5 or Higher English. <\/span><\/span>Pupils will find the course builds upon the skills they have acquired in the faculty of Social Studies and RME<\/span><\/span>. The Politics course is particularly accessible for those with Modern <\/span><\/span>Studies <\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> History <\/span><\/span>and RMPS <\/span><\/span>Highers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Assessment<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Higher exam consists of a 1h 30m assignment <\/span><\/span>and two exam papers. Paper 1 <\/span><\/span>(1h 45m) <\/span><\/span>essay based<\/span><\/span> and Paper 2 <\/span><\/span>(1h 15m) <\/span><\/span>Skills based.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Progression<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many employers and universities regard a qualification <\/span><\/span>Higher Politics <\/span><\/span>as particularly valuable. University courses in the Humanities<\/span><\/span>, Economics<\/span><\/span> and Law are particularly keen on pupils who<\/span><\/span> are qualified in Politics<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
