{"id":259,"date":"2022-10-09T11:10:33","date_gmt":"2022-10-09T10:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/knightswoodprimary\/?page_id=259"},"modified":"2022-10-31T14:58:49","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T14:58:49","slug":"literacy-and-english","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/knightswoodprimary\/literacy-and-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Literacy and English"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><b>READING<\/p>\n<p><\/b>Literacy is fundamental to all areas of learning, as it unlocks access to the wider curriculum.\u00a0Being literate increases opportunities for the individual in all aspects of life, lays the foundation for life long learning and work, and contributes strongly to the development of all four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We use the Oxford Reading Tree and Literacy World Reading Programmes and a wide variety of fiction and non fiction in the teaching of reading.\u00a0The teaching of phonics is a very important part of children learning to read throughout the Early Stages, this then leads to a structured spelling programme.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Teachers read stories and novels on a regular basis which promote listening skills, discussion and an interest in recreational reading.\u00a0Library periods form an important part of our language programme and teachers use a variety of methods to encourage pupils to read and enjoy library books.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We have a Paired Reading Programme which encourages children and adults to read together at home and share stories for enjoyment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A Lending Library has been established by staff and parents.\u00a0Children can borrow and return books from this on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>TALKING AND LISTENING<\/p>\n<p><\/b>Talking and listening helps us to sort out what we think and is our main means of social interaction. It is through talking to peers, teachers and other adults that much of our pupils\u2019 learning occurs. Our curriculum, therefore, offers a widening set of contexts for talking and listening, giving our pupils opportunities to express their own feelings and responses to other pupils\u2019 thoughts, feelings and experiences.<\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>WRITING<\/p>\n<p><\/b>We work hard to encourage children to write well at Knightswood Primary.\u00a0The development of children\u2019s writing is an important part of our Language Curriculum.\u00a0Pupils\u2019 skills are developed from the very beginning of Primary 1 in a variety of contexts and there are opportunities to produce all types of writing.\u00a0Pupils are taught how to craft stories effectively through work on character, setting, structure\/plot and genre.
