Our P6 Peer Mediators
\nare led by Miss Thompson. <\/span><\/h1>\n

Peer Mediation is the process by which pupils attempt to solve problems and conflict in friendship groups by themselves with the help and support of trained Peer Mediators.<\/p>\n

Should a problem arise in the playground, pupils will seek the help of the Peer Mediators who will attempt to solve the problem.<\/p>\n

It is about pupils taking responsibility for their own actions, it is also about being supported through this process in a fair and respectful way so that pupils feel good at the end.<\/p>\n

Our Peer Mediation Station

What does it mean to be a Peer Mediator?<\/span><\/h1>\n

Our Primary 6 children are trained as Peer Mediators in Term 1.\u00a0 They then support other children during Term 2 and 3 as Primary 6s and also when they become Primary 7s.<\/p>\n

During Term 1 of Primary 7, they will help to train and advise the Primary 6s at that time, to pass on and share what they have learned.<\/p>\n

Peer Mediation Training<\/span><\/h1>\n

Trained Peer Mediators have undertaken many practice scenarios. Throughout their training the pupils have used this structure to work through a conference:<\/p>\n

\u2705\u00a0 Welcome and thank you
\n\u2705\u00a0 Agree the Rules:
\n– Respectful Discussion
\n– No interrupting
\n– Only one speaker at a time
\n– Focus on listening to each other.
\n\u2705\u00a0 Hearing both sides
\n\u2705\u00a0 Reaching agreement
\n\u2705\u00a0 Check agreement and say thank you<\/p>\n

They have also been trained to use effective lines of questioning such as:<\/p>\n

\u2705\u00a0 What happened?
\n\u2705 How did you feel?
\n\u2705 What were you thinking?
\n\u2705 How do you feel now?
\n\u2705 Who else has been affected by this?
\n\u2705 What do you\/we need to do to sort this?<\/p>\n

Peer Mediators have been taught the importance of working together to help resolve any conflict between friends.<\/p>\n

What will a Peer Mediation do? <\/span><\/h1>\n

Once a problem has been brought to a Peer Mediators attention, they will invite the pupils to the Peer Mediation Station to take part in a friendly, supportive and inclusive discussion.<\/p>\n

\u2705\u00a0 It is about giving everyone a chance to tell their side of the story.
\n\u2705\u00a0 It is about listening and not judging.
\n\u2705\u00a0 It is used to repair harm and keep the school family together.<\/p>\n
