We provide a supportive and dynamic environment where students can develop essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in order to thrive in society.

We are passionate about helping each student discover the power of language and its potential to inspire change, spark creativity, and shape understanding.

S1-S3 BGE

In the Broad General Education, we aim to develop pupils’ literacy and communication skills which are vital to academic and real-life success. Through a rich curriculum that includes the study of literature, media, and language, we help students explore different perspectives, express their ideas clearly, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. By exploring a diverse range of literary and media texts, we aim to develop pupils’ ability to critically analyse the ways in which texts are constructed and how they influence society. This approach allows learners to refine their reading comprehension and interpretive skills, while also expanding their cultural awareness. Reading for enjoyment is something we, as a department, are incredibly passionate about and pupils are encouraged to read within the department, during library periods and at home.

In the BGE, pupils are also given opportunities to develop creatively. Learners are encouraged to express their thoughts and ideas clearly and persuasively by producing imaginative, persuasive and personal reflective pieces on a wide range of topics. Additionally, group discussions, debates, and presentations within the BGE curriculum strengthen their speaking and listening skills, enabling them to communicate effectively in a variety of settings.

Senior School

In the Senior Phase, we offer a range of courses and opportunities:

English – National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher: Through the study of a range of literary texts, including works by Scottish authors, students will enhance their ability to communicate effectively, critically analyse texts, and produce both creative and discursive writing, preparing them for further study and real-world challenges.

Media – National 5 and Higher: This course immerses students in the exciting world of media, helping them understand the powerful impact media has on society.
