Laws<\/h2>\n<p>(refer to examples in Summary Sheets Part 1)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Force is a vector<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Force is a vector quantity.\u00a0 The direction that a force acts in will dictate the effect that it has.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Balanced Forces<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two forces acting in opposite directions are said to be <strong>balanced<\/strong>.\u00a0 The effect is equivalent to <strong>no force<\/strong> acting on the object at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Newton\u2019s First Law<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn object will remain at rest or move at a constant velocity in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This means that if the forces acting on an object are balanced, then the object will remain stationary if it was already stationary.\u00a0 For a moving object, if the forces acting on it are balanced, then it will continue to move in a straight line at a constant velocity.<\/p>\n<p>balanced forces \u2194 Object at rest OR object moving at a constant velocity in a straight Law<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If an overall resultant (or unbalanced) force is applied to an object, then the object will accelerate in the direction of the unbalanced force.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The greater the resultant force, the greater the acceleration.<\/li>\n<li>The smaller the mass, the greater the acceleration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These two relationships are combined to give<\/p>\n<p m\/s<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Free Body Diagrams and Newton\u2019s Second Law<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFree body diagrams\u201d are used to analyse the forces acting on an object.\u00a0 The <strong>names<\/strong> of the forces are labelled on the diagram.\u00a0 (It is also useful to mark the <strong>sizes<\/strong> of the forces on the diagram).<\/p>\n<p>This enables us to calculate the resultant force, and then apply F<sub>un<\/sub>=ma.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Forces at Right Angles<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The resultant force arising from two forces acting at right angles can be found by<\/p>\n<p>(a)\u00a0 Drawing the force vectors \u201cnose-to-tail\u201d<br \/>\n(b)\u00a0 Calculating the magnitude using Pythagoras<br \/>\n(c)\u00a0 Calculate the direction using trigonometry (SOH-CAH-TOA)<\/p>\n<p><em>(Alternatively, you could draw the vectors \u201cnose-to-tail\u201d as a scale diagram.\u00a0 Then find the magnitude using a ruler and your chosen scale, and the direction using a Law<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Newton noticed that forces occur in pairs. He called one force the <strong>action <\/strong>and the other the <strong>reaction<\/strong>. These two forces are always <strong>equal in size, but opposite in direction<\/strong>. They do not both act on the same object.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If an object A exerts a force (the action) on object B, then object B will exert an equal, but opposite force (the reaction) on object
