Additional Support Needs
The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, often referred to as the ASL Act, sets out a legal framework for supporting children and young people who require some additional support with their learning in pre-5 establishments and schools.
The Act places a duty on Education Services to ensure that all children and young people are provided with the support they require to help them to work towards achieving their potential and benefit from school education.

There are a range of planning tools available to staff for children and young people who have additional support needs. Your child may have a:
- Additional Support Plan (ASP)
- Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP)
Details of the particular support plan will be shared with parents at review meetings and parents evenings.
If your child has a support plan it will contail the following detail:
- Core information about the child
- Supports in place and who provides these
- The type of learning plan with learning outcomes and review schedule
Parents and carers are an essential part of the planning and supporting process and there is a high expectation that they will make a valuable contribution to planning and supporting their child’s learning outcomes.
It is important that parents are fully involved in their child’s learning and we encourage parents to play an active role in matters concerning their child.
Parents will be invited to meetings about their child where decisions concerning his or her additional support needs may be taken and parents’ and pupils’ views will be sought and recorded.
Parents / carers will be involved in both the assessment of their child’s needs and the planning of learning outcomes detailed on their child’s support plan.
