Broad General Education<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In S1-3\u00a0young people\u00a0have the opportunity to enhance their\u00a0skills by responding to a wide range of increasingly complex texts in poetry, drama, prose fiction and non-fiction, as well as film and television, print and non-print advertisements.\u00a0They\u00a0are encouraged and supported in developing\u00a0their\u00a0creative and analytical skills,\u00a0their\u00a0independent and co-operative learning as well as\u00a0their\u00a0interest in personal reading.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Skills in Reading, Writing, and Talking and Listening will be assessed in class throughout the year. In English progress is recorded in\u00a0the\u00a0BGE folio jotter. This allows young people\u00a0to chart\u00a0their\u00a0skills development in English experiences and outcomes from S1 onwards. It is in\u00a0the BGE folio that the young\u00a0person’s\u00a0teacher will provide feedback on how well\u00a0they\u00a0have met the success criteria for tasks,\u00a0their\u00a0strengths and\u00a0areas to develop.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A love of English<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The English Department foster and encourage a love for the English language and of reading. Personal reading of fiction and non-fiction is built into the curriculum and\u00a0every young person\u00a0will have library borrowing time included in\u00a0their\u00a0learning. There are regular visits to the school from professional writers, cinema and theatre visits are arranged and a number of clubs run at lunchtimes to encourage a love of the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Choice, Challenge and Enjoyment<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To provide you with choice and challenge, and to encourage enjoyment of the subject, Creative Electives are organised\u00a0throughout the BGE. These include exciting opportunities for young people\u00a0to, for example:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0investigate\u00a0eco issues in the English classroom and outdoors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Create\u00a0a novel from the planning to the publication stage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. \u00a0examine\u00a0aspects of film production and analysis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Clubs in the English Department<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>A number of lunchtime and after school clubs are offered. Lunchtime clubs include the Creative Writing club; Comics and Manga group; Origami; Table Tennis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>After school we also offer a quiet, supportive space for pupils to complete homework for any subject and receive support with this homework if required.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>For pupils in the senior phase we offer a range of supported study classes. These include support with exam technique in all assessable elements of N5 and Higher: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation; Critical Essay; Scottish Text and Folio Writing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0also offer, when we can,\u00a03 hour\u00a0Masterclasses\u00a0on Saturday mornings and invite all pupils to attend in order to build confidence in the lead up to SQA examinations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Progression to the senior phase\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>The skills that young people learn throughout their BGE prepare them\u00a0for the National Qualifications pathway they\u00a0choose in S4-S6.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        In S4, young people can study for an award in N3, N4 or N5 English.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Building on achievement and attainment from S4, a young person can then study for N5, Higher or Advanced Higher English; or N4, N5 or Higher Scottish Studies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>All young people working in the senior phase have access to their own English class\u2019 Teams platform where they can access all resources used in class including details of homework and deadlines, study materials and links to commercially produced resources and websites.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Career Pathways<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>A secure pass in English at National 5 or\u00a0Higher\u00a0level is required by almost all employers, colleges and universities. More obvious courses linked to English include:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
