In January 2018 and 2019, a team of 16 pupils and 2 teachers travelled to Skye to complete a Leadership Academy with Columba 1400. Columba 1400 is an award winning social enterprise and charity. The purpose of Columba is to help young people realise that they have the confidence to transform their lives and those around them. The values based approach provides young people to come together through a range of activities which take place in their home community and through a residential in Skye. The pupils were tasked with exploring their own values and how this impacts on their leadership and how they can use these as part of their daily lives.
The pupils completed indoor and outdoor sessions around Columba’s values of Awareness, Focus, Creativity, Integrity, Perserverance and Service. Taking part in Coastal walk, exploring Staffin and the beaches around the island. The leadership academy for young people is designed to give young people the strength and courage to find their own unique voice and purpose and to use that voice to inspire families and communities on return.
Our young people were very successful in this academy and have achieved a level 6 award in Leadership – the first school in the country to achieve this. On return to school the pupils led various leadership tasks such as, organising a charity football match, leading a bake sale and running a number of different charity events. The pupils managed to raise a significant sum of money for the Children’s hospital.
