VIISS team support visually impaired pupils in Primary and Secondary mainstream schools throughout Glasgow. They also support visually impaired pre-5 pupils at nursery or in the home. Support is delivered in a range of forms, depending on the identified need of the individual pupil
A member of the team is also dedicated to supporting pupils with visual impairment in ASL schools
VIISS staff will offer development and training in all aspects of visual impairment to class or whole staff groups as requested. Training may take the form of a general understanding of visual impairment issues, or may be focused on how to support a particular pupil or group of pupils with VI in the school/class.
Following referral, VIISS staff will assess pupils with identified/suspected visual impairment and will, in collaboration with the school, plan and deliver a suitable programme of support for that pupil which facilitates access to the curriculum and full inclusion in the mainstream setting
This may involve a range of strategies/methods, such as:
– advice and guidance on suitable aids to vision
– referral to low vision aid clinic
– teaching braille/touch typing on a 1-1 basis
– advising on the adaptation of educational materials to ensure accessibility
– advising on strategies to foster inclusion
– advice on VI technology to support access to the curriculum for VI pupils
